Devious Journal Entry

Haven't posted here in a while, so here's a share from my deviantArt account.

I was getting a lot of interest in my high dynamic range (HDR) photo experiments on facebook, so I decided to get the top three printed.

For a while I wasn't convinced that they'd look good printed because the tone mapping process, while it enhances detail, can introduce artefacts like ghosting and coloured fringing which looks nasty when blown up. These are mainly down to two issues respectively - if the different exposures don't quite align perfectly, and if parts of the photo are still overexposed. The Facebook photos were too small to reveal these, so they looked good. Oh, and another problem is moving items like vehicles or clouds, or vegetation blowing in the wind - this really messes things up unless some editing is carried out.

I spent some time carefully rebuilding several of my HDR photos after the initial tests I posted on facebook, picking exposures which capture as much of the range as possible (I took a lot of shots), and making use of the 'Hugin' tool to ensure that my photos overlapped perfectly prior to tone mapping.

Isle of Mull Boatwrecks is now available as prints and cards from the KMSO Website.
