I've always been a big fan of sticking to a project till I finish it and then start a new one. Writing projects, that is.
But I've been stuck for a while with this YA novel I know I have to make even more awesome, I need to stress conflict and make characters more believable. I know it will end up being the best novel I've written so far. But it will take a lot of time, and I'm not seeing lots of results in the meantime. It's just a big mess.
So, a friend of mine sent me a piece of news about a small literary contest for picture books text. I've had a couple of ideas I wanted to explore but it was a long time since I wrote a picture book. Last time I wrote a picture book I didn't know as much as I do now about stories, and how to create them, and what agents and publishers want in a picture book. But I could write one in a single evening. I did write three in three weeks.
And even got them published.
So I've started a picture book and finished second draft today. I'm so proud to be able to say I've finished something, even something so small, I may get to write some more picture books just for the sake of saying I've finished something.
I know I'll have to edit. But... yet. I've got a sense of accomplishment I was in real need for.
