As my kid asked for so many books for Christmas, I'm having a blast with all these YA and MG books.
These last two weeks have been devoted to the supernatural, so I read first in Vampire Diaries and Second for Ghostgirl: Homecoming.
I liked both stories, each for different motives.
Ghostgirl is funny, even more than funny, twisted and wicked and enjoyable. Tonya Hurley does a great job showing teen attitude and mind in a way no teen would be upset. She does show how teens should grow up and learn some things but at the same time delivers and engaging story. I have to admit in the first book I was mad at Charlote. How could she be so stupid? But I loved Scarlet. In this book, on the other hand, I had a hard time picking one or the other. Both are likable in a way, and both do sacrifice themselves greatly. Both become heroines. Even Petula learns something!
But what I loved from the time I saw the first book in the series was the packaging. I saw Ghostgirl two Christmas ago in a mall and I just had to get it and read it. It was instant love. Second book packaging is also wonderful. Its cover, the black pages and white ink for the brief fragments on what Charlotte or Scarlett are learning or should learn, the pictures...
Vampire Diaries on the other hand, maybe it's because it's from the 90's, but character is a bit too perfect for my taste. I like the story but Elena has everything: she's pretty, she's smart and she gets whatever she wants. Even the two boys she likes. Will try and read next books to decide. I liked the story, and the twist of the vampire being able to walk by daylight with the ring, I like Bonny's character predicting everything and I liked Damon and his dark side.
Now I'm diving into MG and reading School of Fear. Will talk about it in a nearby post.
