research and running

Today I went to the library to do some novel research. Mostly I checked out bird books (thanks to achyroptera for the advice!) to help me out with certain details. The remaining research I need to do is mental -- I have to muse on some questions about the characters and backstory and decide on the correct answers. I hope to get enough of that taken care of tomorrow that I can start the actual open-the-document-and-type-things editing on Wednesday.

In non-writing news, to my own amazement, I've decided to give running a try. I used to think that there was no way I would ever take up this exercise, since I can't run a block without gasping for breath. But in contemplating what kind of fitness routine I might actually enjoy and stick to, somehow it seemed like a good idea. When I found out about the Couch-to-5K Running Plan, it even seemed like a not altogether crazy idea. I started today, with a workout that alternated 60 seconds of running with 90 seconds of walking, and I gasped my way through 20 minutes and didn't collapse. I'm pretty impressed with myself, though it's hard to believe that it really will get easier.

I'm posting about this here in hopes that announcing it publicly will ensure that I follow through with the entire program. I also know that a lot of you are runners, so if you have any tips for starting out, I'd appreciate hearing them.
