I can't wait to see the numbers for PotC 2's effect on the box office.

I was going to go see Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest tonight." I knew there would be a big turn-out, how could there not be? But I couldn't pre-buy my tickets online, because it wasn't certain until the last minute whether I would be going to the local theater or the larger, nicer one in Pensacola (long story, boring reasons, not important). So I decided to just leave early and try my luck with buying the tickets on the spot.

I also decided to make the drive to that aforementioned larger, nicer theater. They had a lot more showings listed than the local, in fact they were screening the movie almost every thirty minutes. Better odds of slipping in under the wire, I thought. But when I got there, I noticed something odd.

You see, about a year and a half ago, the theater started working on expanding their parking lot. They cleared a space about three-quarters of the size of the original lot off to the side of the building, and started paving it over. Roughly one third of that new lot is still rough red clay.

There were so many cars at the theater, they had not only filled up the original parking lot, and the paved section of the new lot, and the unpaved section of the new lot, they were parked two and three deep on the grass behind the building and around the little amusement park next door. There were so many people clogging up the interior of the building that a lot of people - some in costume - were waiting for their showing outside in the 90 degree heat.

When I got to the ticket booth, a rather flustered girl informed me that all of today's showings of Pirates were sold out. Damn, I thought. But I could still try our little local theater, which did okay business but had never seen a truly full parking lot.

When I got to said local theater, there were hastily-written signs taped every ten inches or so along the glass front of the ticket booth. They read, "ALL TODAY'S SHOWINGS OF PIRATES SOLD OUT. TRY AGAIN TOMORROW." Behind the glass was a teenager on the verge of the tears, trying to explain to an equally emotional twelve-year-old that she was sorry, but there were just no seats left.

I consoled myself at a nearby restaurant with a meal that has probably shot to hell all the working out I've done in preparation for the upcoming vacation's inevitable swimsuits. Then I came home and bought tickets online for an afternoon showing tomorrow. For further consolation, I watched Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead, which amuses me to no end. (Gary Oldman! *squee*)

So I'm a little disappointed, but I have to tell you, watching the crowds at those theaters - jewelry-draped, heavily made-up scene kids, elated geeks in full costume, seventy-year-old grannies waving plastic swords and screeching "arrrrrgh!", little kids bouncing around and demanding to know from their parents just where that rum has gone (all of which I saw today) - rather took the edge off the disappointment.

And tomorrow at 4:30 I get my pirate fix. Arrrrrgh!

ETA: from alejandrasophia's journal:

List 7 songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying right now. Post these instructions in your live journal along with your 7 songs. Then tag 7 other people to see what they're listening to in absolute random order.
(I'm not tagging anybody, do it if you want to. And you can post it in a comment if you don't want to make an actual post in your own journal.)

Crazy - Gnarls Barkley
Come on now, who do you,
Who do you, who do you, who do you think you are?
Ha ha ha, bless your soul.
You really think you're in control?
Well I think you're crazy.

I Know - Dionne Farris
I know what you're doing, yeah,
I know why you say you love me,
I know what you're doing, yeah,
And I don't think it's fair.

Ghetto Gospel - Tupac feat. Elton John
It ain't about black or white, cuz we're human,
I hope we see the light before it's ruined.
My ghetto gospel.

Summertime - Sam Cooke
Summertime and the living is easy,
Fish are jumping and the cotton is high,
Your daddy's rich and your mama's good-looking,
So hush little baby, don't you cry.

It's Not A Side Effect Of The Cocaine, I Am Thinking It Must Be Love - Fall Out Boy
Put your hand between an aching head
And an aching world,
We'll make them so jealous,
We'll make them hate us.

Six Days - DJ Shadow feat. Mos Def
There goes the shot.
Escalation, devastation,
generation, separation,
situation, dissipation, shot.
Another shot, another shot.

Miss Murder - AFI
With just a look, they shook,
And heavens bowed before him,
Simply a look can break your heart.

Also, I am considering a name change. I don't know why, and I think the urge will probably pass, but it's just something that's popped into my head.
