Chapter 19

“C’mon!” Artie said, wrapping an arm around Claudia’s shoulders and guiding her through the door that led to the deck. “We have to get out of here!”

“What about Audrey?” Claudia said, raising her voice as she walked out onto the deck.

“The others will have her. We need to get Duke’s boat ready to get out of here when they come. Hide!” Artie said, drawing her back into the shadows. Several Regents that had helped abduct Artie and Claudia ran for the lifeboats. They tumbled into them and began to lower them. Unfortunately, the storm that Claudia had predicted hours ago had finally hit, and the lifeboats were all the worse for it. Several flipped over and their wreckage collided with the rest of the boats. It wouldn’t be long before they noticed Duke’s boat. Granted it was on the other side of the ship, but they would see it soon and start invading. And that was the last thing that needed to happen on this night.

Artie, Claudia and Duke ran around the deck and over to Duke’s boat, which was just a few feet away from Valda’s. Duke stepped back as far as he could go, ran and then vaulted over to his boat. His hands managed to find the rail, and he clung to it for dear life, hauling himself up onto the deck. He turned back to Artie and Claudia and raised a hand, telling them to wait a second. He ran into the depths of his boat and then brought back a piece of wood, laying it across the two boats, making a small, thin bridge.

Over a raging sea and blowing winds.

“You have got to be kidding me.” Artie said.

“Yeah...I’m not sure I want to risk my life on that,” said a familiar voice behind her. Claudia turned around.

“Audrey!” She said, happily. Behind her stood Myka, Pete and Nathan. Claudia squealed and launched into Myka and Pete, who both hugged her.

Myka, Pete and Nathan had apparently all found Audrey being stored in a cage just like Claudia. Apparently the Regents had plans for Audrey as well as Claudia. But unlike Claudia, they hadn’t known who the Caretaker of Haven was until they had met the Rev.

“He must have an inside source.” Nathan said, shaking his head. “How else would he have been able to figure out who the Caretaker of Haven was?”

“Or see that Valda was coming and realize he wanted Caretakers. He couldn't have known Valda before today, because he would have told him the second you came into town and there would have been no need to torture Artie for info.” Audrey added.

“The sick bastard probably would have done it anyway.” Artie growled softly. Claudia nodded in agreement.

“Maybe he -” Claudia was about to interject when Artie gave her a small push towards the wooden beam. While they were talking, Myka and Pete had already gone across it to make sure it was safe, and now it was Claudia’s turn. She turned worriedly to Artie. The wind whipped her hair and the rain pummeled her skin, feeling like tiny bullets, but she grabbed his hand and wouldn't let go for anything.

“You promise you’ll come after me?” She asked, hoping he wasn’t going to attempt to do anything stupid, like go after Valda on his own.

“There shouldn't be anything to worry about after this.” Audrey interjected. “The Rev. turned invisible and vanished once he realize that he couldn’t kill us all. The lifeboats are being picked up by other ships, which I’m guessing are your Regents. They’ll either be arrested or drown.” But Claudia wasn’t reassured by Audrey’s words - she had eyes only for Artie.

“You promise?” She asked again.

“I promise.” Artie vowed, looking her straight in the eyes, not unaware that the last time he had made a huge promise it had gone horribly wrong. But Claudia nodded and began to carefully go across the wooden board. For five agonizing minutes Artie watched as Claudia made her way between the two ships. She walked slowly and carefully and finally made it to Duke’s ship. Artie felt himself relax. He then motioned for Audrey and Nathan to go before him. They were more important - if anything happened to them than Haven would be in serious trouble.

Audrey and Nathan walked across the board together, neither letting go of each other’s hands, as though that would do them any good against the elements. But it seemed to give them courage. Finally, they reached Duke’s ship, and Audrey clambered onto the deck. But before Nathan could, a huge gust of wind blew him off of the board. Everyone began to scream and shout, but Audrey thrust a hand out and grabbed her Guardian before anything could happen to him. With the help of Duke and Claudia, Audrey hauled him overboard. After making sure Nathan was okay, Duke motioned to Artie to come over.

Artie put one foot on the wooden board, spreading out his arms to balance him when he felt one arm being grabbed and dragged backward. He reached out to swat it with the other arm, but felt that one being restrained too. He heard Claudia’s scream as he was dragged backwards into the depths of the sinking ship.

“NO!” Claudia screamed, watching Artie get hauled away by Valda and the Rev. She immediately went to the wooden board, but Duke was already one step ahead of her. He has halfway across it when the Rev. kicked it out from the rouge Regents’ ship and Duke went tumbling into the waters. Immediately Audrey and Nathan started to try and find a way to go after Duke while Myka and Pete began searching for something that would help them save Artie.

Claudia looked around frantically. She couldn’t loose Artie. Her head was pounding and she was biting her lip so hard that blood was pouring out of it. He couldn't leave her. Not now.

Not now.

She raced through the ship looking for something that would help her get to Artie, when she saw an old knife sitting on a desk of Duke’s. She raced past it twice, looking for something else, when an idea popped into her head. She grabbed it and went back up to the deck. Grabbing a piece of rope fastened to the mast, she cut it loose and ran backwards, slipping the knife into her jacket pocket as she did so. When she reached the end of the deck, she raced forward and flung herself toward the Regents’ ship, holding onto the rope for dear life. The rain made it slip in her hands but she grasped it tightly. She heard screams behind her but didn’t have time to focus on them as the deck of the ship came up below her. She let herself go and rolled to the deck. She got up and inspected herself. So far, so good. She just hoped that she hadn’t cut something really important on the ship.

Now she just had to find and rescue Artie, while defeating two crazed psychopaths, one who had artifacts at his command, another who could turn himself invisible.

Great.
