Hyukjae woke up early that morning, making sure he checked on the kids before heading to the bathroom to shower. He snuck in and picked Kyuhyun’s pillows and blanket off the floor after he saw that he had kicked them all off of his bed. He had to stifle his chuckle when he saw how Kyuhyun was sprawled out haphazardly on his bed and barely resisted the urge to poke his exposed belly. After settling Kyuhyun in a more comfortable position he placed his blankets back over him and walked out the room.
When he got out of the bathroom he ventured into the kitchen, poking around the cabinets looking for something to fix for breakfast. Not having the best cooking skills (Ryeowook did most of the cooking for them) he decided on something simple. Omelets.
He had successfully made one and was moving on to the next one when he was joined by a groggy and confused-looking Donghae.
“Hyukjae? What are you doing?” he asked as he moved through the kitchen and to the coffee pot.
“Making breakfast. Hope you like omelets,” Hyukjae said, smiling at Donghae briefly before returning to the yellow goop he was stirring.
“Sounds good,” Donghae said, helping himself to a cup of coffee, face brightening as soon as he took a whiff of the dark liquid. “But you didn’t have to make us breakfast,” he said, taking a sip of his coffee and sighing quietly in relief as the warm liquid buzzed his senses awake.
“Well, I was hungry, and I’m sure the kids can’t cook for themselves, so I thought I might as well cook for everyone,” he said as he poured his perfectly beat mixture into the skillet. “Anything special you want in yours?” he asked.
“Cheese and mushrooms,” Donghae answered with a smile as he walked to sit at the table. Hyukjae nodded, dropping the necessary ingredients in the skillet and flipping it over, highly pleased that it had come out as well as it did.
“So, how was your day yesterday?” Donghae asked and Hyukjae turned to look at him, noticing the how the smile he had turned mischievous.
“You set me up,” Hyukjae accused, pointing the spatula at him. “You sent your monster of a driver up to force me into going.”
“Who, me?” Donghae asked, eyes widening in the picture of innocence, only wrecking the image when he laughed as Hyukjae pouted at him.
“I’m not a child. You don’t have to send someone to watch over me,” he said as he plated the omelet for Donghae and sat it in front of him.
“Says the one who is pouting at me,” Donghae smirked at him before taking a bite out of his breakfast. “Mmm,” he moaned in approval. “This is really good,” he managed to say before his mouth became too busy to talk.
“Thanks,” Hyukjae said, smiling despite himself. “Well, since everything’s done, I’m gonna go wake the kids,” he said, turning off the stove. He heard Donghae’s grunt of a response and rolled his eyes, tossing a napkin on the table. “I really hope the kids have better table manners than you.”
He walked to Kyuhyun’s door first, only to stop and decide maybe he should save him for last. He turned back around and headed to Jino’s room walking in quietly before sitting on his bed.
“Jino-ah,” he called, shaking the sleeping boy softly. “Jino-ah, it’s time to wake up.” Jino started shifting under his hand, squirming under his covers and letting out a soft whine of protest.
“Aww, don’t whine. It’s time for breakfast,” Hyukjae said, pulling him up and sitting him on his lap. Jino’s head instantly fell against Hyukjae’s shoulder letting out a large yawn and mumbling softly. Hyukjae just smiled and stood up making his way to Kyuhyun’s room.
“Kyuhyun?” he called, peeking in through the door. He saw that Kyuhyun had managed to kick himself from under his blankets again, but at least they were still on the bed.
“Kyuhyun-ah? It’s time to wake up,” he said when he was closer, poking at Kyuhyun’s face. Kyuhyun’s peaceful sleeping face had turned into a frown and he turned trying to get away from whatever was poking him and when that didn’t work he resorted to swatting. He finally peeked one eye open, looking at his intruder through sleep-clouded eyes.
“It’s time to wake up sleepy head. Breakfast is ready,” Hyukjae said when he saw that he had the boy’s attention. Kyuhyun sat up, with much difficulty, and looked confusedly at Hyukjae for a minute before reaching up and rubbing his eyes softly.
“Are you hungry?” Hyukjae asked. Kyuhyun nodded and Hyukjae held out his hand for Kyuhyun to take. Smiling when he took it, he gently led Kyuhyun out of him, thinking how much more docile he was when he just woke up.
Reaching the kitchen, he led Kyuhyun to a chair-which he climbed up on and immediately leant down to press his face against the table- and put Jino in his booster seat right next to Kyuhyun. Jino was looking a little more alert now that they were in the bright light, staring at his older brother who was in the process of falling back asleep on the table.
“Morning Jino,” Donghae said, walking from the sink where he was washing his dishes to place a kiss on Jino’s head.
“Why Kyu hyung sleep? Time for sleep is done. Time eat now,” he said, pointing at the mop of curly hair.
“You know, you’re right. Hmm, should I wake him up?” Donghae asked Jino, who nodded excitedly at the suggestion. Donghae quickly picked Kyuhyun up from his seat and threw him up over his shoulder, effectively waking the boy, if the kicking and screaming was any indication.
“Hae hyung! Put me down!” he yelled, covering his hands over his eyes in an attempt to lessen the dizziness.
“Are you awake now?” Donghae asked, stopping the spinning only to dangle Kyuhyun upside down by his legs.
“Yes! Yes!” the small boy screeched. Donghae nodded, satisfied with his answer and put him down, watching him wobble unsteadily on his feet and climb back into his seat.
“Hyukjae hyung made you breakfast, so make sure you eat it well, okay?”
“Kay.” Donghae smiled and ruffled his bed head affectionately just as Hyukjae was walking over with their breakfast.
“I’m glad you did that before he ate, otherwise you’d have a big mess to clean up,” he said as he took a seat in the chair next to Jino.
“Me?” Donghae playfully scoffed. “You’re the nanny.”
“For these two,” Hyukjae said, gesturing to Kyuhyun and Jino with a fork before using it to cut a piece of egg and feed it to Jino. “If I’m going to be cleaning up after you too then I’m going to have to insist on a raise.”
“Well, if I do that I’m going to have to insist that I get breakfast in bed from now on,” Donghae said, slinking over to lean on the back of Hyukjae chair. “I haven’t been fed in a long time.”
“Here,” Hyukjae said, reaching up and shoving a small piece of food into his mouth. “Now go away, you already had yours.” Donghae just smiled, accepting the food and leaning down to rest his chin on Hyukjae’s head.
“Well, I should get ready to go,” Donghae said, making Hyukjae whine at the weird feeling it left. “Hopefully, I won’t be back too late tonight,” he said, purposely moving more to annoy Hyukjae.
“Can we watch RoRo?” Jino asked bouncing up and down excitedly, mouth full of unchewed food.
“Aigoo, Jino-ah chew first,” Hyukjae said wiping up the mess he made.
“Of course we can,” Donghae answered, finally lifting himself up off of Hyukjae. “Have it all set up for me later and we can watch it together, okay?” Donghae said, earning a bright smile from Jino and a high-pitched ‘Kay’!
“Hae hyung,” Kyuhyun called, looking up from his half-eaten breakfast.
“Yeah Kyu?”
“I don’t wanna watch Pororo. Jino gets too loud,” he said, gesturing to said boy who was currently trying to feed Hyukjae some food, only missing his mouth by a little bit before getting it in the right spot.
“Well, when I come back I’ll find something for both of us to do. How about I install your game for you? That sound like fun?” Kyuhyun nodded, kicking his feet happily.
“Good,” Donghae said before leaning in to kiss both the boys on their heads. “Then, I’ll see you guys later,” he said, reaching over to wipe off the mess Jino left on Hyukjae face.
“Who’s making a mess now?” he asked cheekily, grinning at the blush that quickly began to spread across the other’s cheeks, before exiting the room, leaving two happy kids and one flustered nanny.
Hyukjae was sitting on the couch with a lap full of a sleeping Jino. The two had spent the last two hours watching Pororo and Hyukjae could only sigh in relief as he looked down to see the other quietly sucking his thumb with his face buried in his thigh.
He carefully leaned over to grab the remote and switch the TV off, leaning his head backwards and resting it against the couch as the little blue penguin finally disappeared off the screen. He had seen enough of that thing to last him two childhoods.
He slid his hands under the little body and gently picked him up, careful not to jostle him too much and risk waking him up and walked down the hall to put him into his bed. After tucking him snuggly into his bed he placed a small kiss on his head before heading out of the room. He walked to Kyuhyun’s room to check up on him. He was watching TV with them while he waited for Donghae to come, but the latter had called to say he was running late and didn’t know when he would be back. Kyuhyun sulked for the rest of the night.
He cautiously opened the door and peeked in to see Kyuhyun curled up on his bed, staring intently at a box that lay in front of him. Hyukjae walked in quietly, choosing to take a seat on the floor next to his bed. He folded his arms on the bed and rested on them, looking up at the frown on Kyuhyun’s face.
“You know Kyuhyun, Donghae hyung said he was really sorry he’s running late,” Hyukjae said softly. Kyuhyun didn’t answer, and only increased the grip he had on his knees. “You know he would be here if he could.”
“He promised,” Kyuhyun whispered, lowering his head down.
“I know.”
“He promised he would install it for me and teach me how to play, but he didn’t,” Kyuhyun said, a tear rolling down his face as he spoke.
“Kyu,” Hyukjae called out sadly.
“He just never came back. He promised me, but he never came back,” Kyuhyun said, cries becoming evident in his voice. Hyukjae’s mouth opened in surprise, suddenly realizing that Kyuhyun wasn’t talking about Donghae anymore. He climbed up on the bed with Kyuhyun, holding the silently crying boy in his arms, while rocking him back and forth soothingly.
“Ssh, it’s ok. It’s going to be ok. Don’t cry.” He heard Kyuhyun sniffling in his shirt and held him tighter.
“Donghae hyung is definitely coming back. You don’t have to worry about that.”
“P-promise?”
“I promise. And you know what else, I’m sure he can teach you how to play just as good as your appa.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
“B-but my appa was really good. The best. Is Hae hyung that good?”
“I’m sure your appa taught him a thing or two. And hey, maybe when you get good enough you can teach Jino how to play too.”
“I don’t think so. He’d be too busy watching Pororo,” Kyuhyun scoffed, making Hyukjae chuckle.
“I’m sure he’d love to play with his hyung. SO you have to make sure to learn everything you can from Donghae hyung so you can teach him all the good stuff, okay?”
“Okay,” Kyuhyun said, holding onto Hyukjae just a little bit tighter. “Hyung?”
“Hmm?” Hyukjae answered, surprised at hearing Kyuhyun call him ‘hyung’.
“… Thank you,” Kyuhyun said quickly before burying his head in Hyukjae’s chest.
“Anytime Kyuhyun-ah.”
“Was he really upset?” Donghae asked as he pulled Kyuhyun’s blankets up over him, making sure to tuck him in rally tight.
“A bit, but he calmed down pretty quickly. I just hope as good a player as I made you out to be,” Hyukjae said as he leaned on the door frame.
Donghae chuckled, “Maybe I’d better get some practice in before he wakes up.” He walked over to Hyukjae and sighed tiredly, giving one last look in Kyuhyun’s direction before closing the door and leaning up against it.
“Thanks for today. I really don’t know how I would’ve made it out of this without Kyuhyun giving me that evil glare of his for the next week.”
Hyukjae just shrugged. “It’s no big deal,” he said as he tucked a piece of hair behind his ear.
“I mean it,” he said as they began walking Hyukjae to his room.
“I’m just glad he’s ok now,” Hyukjae said sincerely. “I’d prefer a scowling Kyuhyun to a crying one any day,” he said with a laugh, Donghae joining in as they reached his door.
Hyukjae turned to him, prepared to say goodnight, but was surprised when Donghae reached over to tuck that same piece of hair back into place.
“You really are amazing,” he said with a smile. Eunhyuk eyes widened and he could feel the heat rising from his neck to the tips of his ears.
“Uh… T-thanks. I should probably get in bed- go to bed! I mean… good night Donghae,” Hyukjae said quickly, flustered beyond belief as he turned quickly to go into his room.
“Good night, Hyukjae,” he heard Donghae call, before he threw himself in his room, closing his door and leaning against it. He listened as Donghae’s footsteps descended down the hall and sighed in relief.
“ He really should not be allowed to look at people like that,” he muttered to himself, pushing himself off the door and moving to change into his pajamas, trying to shake the lingering image of Donghae’s face out of his head.
He’s my boss. My boss, Hyukjae helpfully reminded himself as he climbed into bed, thinking about anything and everything, but Donghae and his sweet smile.
