The house still feels like it’s settling; makes creaking sounds at night.. they still feel like they’re settling.
It’s what she always wanted - a place to call home and he’s happy that she’s here with him.
But she’s quiet; that bothers him.
He lets it pass, rationalizing it with she’s been through a lot and you’re lucky she’s still with you.
He decides that she’ll come around - that she’ll stop avoiding him and will eventually start talking to him again.
Until she finds her journal and suddenly he thinks she’ll never speak to him again.
The journal’s pristine: leather bound with a gold plated tie, completely untouched and unused; the spine cracks when it’s opened.
Except for the notes stuffed inside.
Hundreds of scrap papers stuffed un-Scully like into the book.
The journal has nothing it it but notes, notes, notes....
Random, fleeting thoughts she refuses to address.
I love him but....
Mulder, I miss our son....
You left me...
I blame you....
He reads them all over and over until the words blur and his eyes burn.
He says nothing when he sees her and she’s perfectly fine with that.
The house creaks again and refuses to settle.
