Vampire

I am infatuated already as you know with rooting out pictures of silent movie actresses for the unmistakable marvel of the images that appear. Always dramatic expressions, showy makeup/costumes, classic images. For this reason I have slid into an obsesh withTheda Bara.

She was born Theodosia Goodman in July of 1885, middle child in a prosperous Jewish family and made her debut in film in 1914. She then went onto a 40 film career mostly spent playing husband stealing vamps - one of the first actresses to be typecast in that mold. Her career ended in 1925 when she married her husband, an English director called Charles Brabin but until then she was a very big star.

She was well promoted by the studios and usually presented in a mysterious way that befitted the roles she tended to play. For instance  after her second film when she was introduced to the media they were given an alternate, exotic past for her which painted her as the daughter of French actress and an Italian sculptor whose childhood was spent in Egypt in the shadow of the sphinx. The fact that she'd never been to any of these countries might be why all this hokum was punctured as a pubclicity stunt in time, still the image of her as some mysterious, exotic temptress must have stuck with her audience as she never really escaped that role.

HERE
is a link (pdf) to a very interesting article she wrote for Vanity Fair about her annoyance towards her typecasting

A Wikipedia factlet is that of all the actors with a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame she is the one with the most lost footage. Only 3 of her 40 films is intact as most were lost in fires. Little moving footage of her exists.

Though I was able to find this nice clip from

Unchastened woman
, in which I presume she plays a husband stealer who gets a taste of her own medicine? Basically she shows herself to be a very nice actress in deed, capable of histrionics that really aren't over the top at all. Anyway after her retiring in '25 she lived as a lady of leisure for her married life and died in 1955.

Basically she rocks and I just think she's gorgeous too, although I'm not sure why as she isn't really conventionally what I view as attractive. Interestingly enough she was a Taurus Rising like I am, I say interesting because Rising signs are said to determine what we look like.

"A solid, stocky body, often with a sturdy neck, is characteristic of Taurus Rising. Your head is usually round, but your squarish jaw line tends towards fleshiness. Alternatively, Taurus Rising can also have a chiseled, delicate appearance. Your kind of eyes appears almost cow-like in their tranquility. Your thick hair is soft & often curly. You may have a small nose that turns up at the end. The skin of your face is soft & creamy; a dimple may emphasize your sensual nature."

Seems to describe her quite well, it does for myself too, well, apart from the small nose and delicate appearance I don't really have those but the rest is there.

Anyway in other less dubious and barmy news I am kind of confused that noone has replicated this photo shoot of hers because it's just perfect, sex and death all mixed up...

Maybe they have and I've just never seen it. Anyone else have photos of people with skeletons like this...?

Anyway under the cut are some more skeleton pictures and some other pretty ones.

This shot was no doubt an attempt by the studios to further link Bara with her vampiric characters.
Whilst I despise fake nails I much approve of these prosthetic finger tips, they are the coolest, I want fingers like that... omg does that make me a closeted otherkin??? EEEEP I really hope not.

Totes like a magician's assistant bless her. Lol magicians are scary.

This is another of the visuals that I am depressed that more people haven't ripped off, it's so undeniably perfect

Cleopatra

Prototype Kate Bush if I've ever seen it...

Gothic dog walking service? Just begging to be made into an arty postcard

Strangely although this was clearly taken at the same time as the other prosthetic finger tip one above she looks like she's ALIVE instead of alive but should be dead as she did in that one. Brilliant what a bit of lighting can do eh.

Even back then the starlets loved the handbag doggles.

Classic Madonna, this is a terribly beautiful image to me although why I shouldn't be able to say in words.

Someone prob needs to stop me before I do a similar picspam of Clara Bow...

theda bara, astrology, taurus, picspam, silent movie stars
