Are we trying to force the issue?

As America develops and transitions into the new millennium, I am noticing that regional differences are mounting. These differences have always been present, but the nation as a whole has been able to integrate these differences of opinions by focusing on similar values and shared goals. I no longer believe that the separate Regions of America are ( Read more... )

Oh, I agree that cultural identity is no reason to divide a country. Political division however... That's the thing about America, is that politics is such a massive part of our cultural identity. You have arguments in other nations, surely- but the degree of opposition bordering on if not crossing the line of hate- on both sides- really staggers me. What you say may be true, but it seems, in our two party system, there is no room for discussion. Both sides are so busy attacking the other, and working at cross purposes for their own benefit rather then the nations (exceptions excluded, naturally) that I honestly think the entire system would benefit if each region received the representation and government they desired. Federal powers are sweeping, and on issues where their is little to no gray area- the right to die, abortion, other key moral and ethical decisions, we are forcing people one way or another to swallow a bitter pill- one which I do believe they should stand up against. If you truly believe that abortion is murder, how can you in any good conscious allow a government to preside over you that condones it? My morals would demand an armed rebellion against such tyranny, if I felt along those lines.

A split along religious lines is a poor parallel to a split along political lines. Forgive me, but religion does not force itself upon our day to day lives. Its influences do, certainly, but not a direct force of its dogma enacted upon the general public.

Ideally, yes, ideally. I can also see a world without war! Ideally, it would not know conflict, only brotherhood, and have no arms or weapons.... but the reality of the situation is we would invade that world, and conquer it in about three days.

I hear what you’re saying, and it is a valid concern, that nothing good can come from division. I respect that point against division, but I’m also perusing this from a stance for consolidation- that those of like minds be subject to their own rule. But then, I'm a fan of the city state system as well. heh.

One vote for No! Good input, especially about the media. I really do wonder at what point the damage to the public will cause some level of government regulations of media along the same lines as is needed to the financial section for the same reason. A slipper sloap that, and a dangerous one. A well informed populous is the only safeguard against tryany, but 'well informed' is becoming a harder and harder definition to nail down as commentary and spin is put more and more openly into the public forum.

Thanks for walking along with me in this exploration. I'm just so very curious about how the general public would take such an offer!
