Applebuck Season 2011 - 2

Nov 04, 2011 16:48

So, nanowrimo has been eating my life.  In hindsight, I should have probably selected a different time to do the reviews.  However, I can keep the reviews coming, but not as frequently.  Also, maybe not seven reviews, but a smattering of them spread over the month.  So, without further ado, may the season continue!!!

This time, I bring to you the Gettysberg (also known as the nittany.)

This apple is kinda brilliant.  Wonderfully crisp, just short of being too hard on the teeth.  It is mostly sweet with a tiny bit of a sour bite, but that's not what makes this apple spectacular.  That's the nutmeg and cloves.

YES, YOU HEARD ME RIGHT.  In addition to being wonderfully flavored, this apple has a mild aroma and nuttiness reminiscent of cloves and nutmeg.  If it weren't so hard to get a hold of this apple, I would do about all of my holiday baking and snacking with it such is it's flavor.  If I ever get an apple that surprises me so pleasantly as this one has, it will not be soon enough.  Really, if for no other reason than to discover the wonder, you MUST try this apple.

The apple itself is quite beautiful.  Moderately sized (usually about the size of a woman's fist) it is covered in vibrant corals with stripes of red an yellow.  Of course, some come out redder, others more yellow, but neither really stops it from being a color show.

This is really one of the rarest flavored apples I have ever had the fortune to come across.
