Applebuck Season 2011 - 1

Howdy!  I'm starting this a bit late, but a cross between ponies and apples and thanksgiving encouraged me to make week 1 of november Applebuck week.  So, every day this week I will review one kind of apple.  Now, I know a lot of you are thinking, "apple reviews?  How is she gonna fill a week?  I already know apples!"  Or something like that.  But there are hundreds of varieties of apples, and well more than the half-dozen that reach the shelves in the average supermarket.  Today, I'll review one of my favorite snack apples: the bellflower.

Now, the Bellflower is a massive yellow apple.  The smallest ones of these I have ever seen was the size of a softball.  They are pure yellow like a golden delicious and very juicy.  They are not exceptionally crisp, but still crunchy.  A nice blend of sweet and tart makes this apple a tasty and mild apple that is great on its own and more complex than the standard purely sweet apples like the Fuji or Honeycrisp.  It has a light aroma to it almost reminiscent of florals to make the day extra nice.  I like eating this apple on warm days as it's refreshing juice makes the day feel that much clearer.

It doesn't keep well for pies or tarts as the softer meat makes it more likely to just disintegrate under the heat, but that doesn't stop it from being very high on my list of tasty treats.  It makes an excellent juice base, however, and would be a welcome addition to any meal.
