Paint Shop Pro Icon Tutorial #1: Cropping, Resizing, and Adding Borders

Oct 26, 2005 14:10

I will be doing a series of PSP icon tutorials, since alexi_serenitia requested some help with making icons. I use Corel Paint Shop Pro X, so while my program may look somewhat different, it is still essentially the same program as earlier versions. If there is something that I do within the program that cannot be done with earlier editions, please let me know.

First, find an image that you’d like to turn into an icon. For this tutorial, I’ll be using an image from DNAngel.

Open your image in PSP. Select the cropping tool, and select the area you want to use for the icon. (Make sure that the width and height of the selected area are equal if you want a square icon.)

Double-click on the selection, and it will crop the image.

Next, go to Image on the toolbar are select Resize.

Change your pixel dimensions to 100x100.

Go to Image again. This time, select Canvas Size.

Set your new dimensions to 98x98 pixels.

Go to Image again, and select Add Borders.

Select what color you want for a border, and set the size of pixels as 1.

Finished product:

Also, you can skip steps by initially resizing your image to 98x98. You can also play around with the width of your border, like resizing your image to 97x97 and having a 2 pixel wide border.
