Children of Men
What a great movie. Clive Owen is amazing. The plot is amazing, and one scene specifically is the most powerful thing I've ever seen from a movie. Ever.
Go see it. It is amazing.
The movie is set in the near future, 2027, I think. Anyway, for some reason, women are (as you may be able to tell if you can read the poster) infertile. The youngest person on the planet is 18 years old. It's a scary place. For some reason that is never really explained, Britain has closed its borders and refugees seeking shelter from an apparently war-torn world are treated very harshly. The main story follows a very startling thing discovered by a refugee activism group: a pregnant woman. Many conflicts arise before the baby is even born: How is the baby to be treated, doctors may steal it, should the baby be used as a political weapon, should the baby be made public?
It's all so wonderfully constructed, it's hard to explain.
One last note, because I really don't think I can say anything more about this movie until you all see it: I think this is the first time I've ever seen a depiction of the future that was even mildly realistic. Old cars still exist, not all the buildings are gleaming skyscrapers or imposing concrete blocks. I just found that really nice, because that's one of the biggest gripes I've ever had with sci-fi movies.
