My London place has wireless internet, which would have been fine had any of my computer systems had a wireless card. So I'm looking for something to stick into my PC and/or laptop that will give me the internet.
My landlady has a
Lynksis WRT54G wireless router. According to cnet, it's okay. I can deal with that. The problem is that looking for a usb wireless adapter that doesn't suck and is compatible with the router, is proving like a very hard thing to do. Especially since I hadn't known much about wireless prior to yesterday.
My dilemma is that I don't want to get a Lynksis wireless adapter, because they ALL have horrendous reviews and some aren't even backwards compatible with other Lynksis hardware (despite what the box claims). That's pretty shady to me.
I'm eying Netgear now as a possible alternative, but even they aren't looking so flowery.
And then there's the never-ending question of should I get a 802.11g or a 802.11n draft (to get ahead of future compatibility issues)? It seems like a G would be the safer bet, especially since the landlady's wireless router seems to be a *draft* G, and basically mostly a 802.11b anyway.
Do I even know what I'm talking about, and how this actually impacts performance? Somewhat, but not really.
All I want is a wireless adapter that actually picks up the signal, doesn't cut out every five minutes, and is compatible with the landlady's hardware.
Why couldn't she just have ethernet jacks? Those always work. Or at least some of those electrical wiring adapters that some people mention as having wised up to.
So what sort of wireless cards/adapters are you guys using? Do you like them?
