Writer's Block: Sweet Tooth (and Easter Memories)

Happy Easter!

Peeps! I love the Bunnies and the Chicks, any color!

(Close second, chocolate truffles for Valentine's Day, and a close third, candy canes for Christmas holidays).

I remember a few Easters coloring eggs (PAAS, anyone?) and going on a few egg hunts. But my family wasn't into that. Mom was (and still is) the super ultra-Catholic, so Easter was all about going to church. Sunday Mass and possibly brunch afterwards. But that was about it.  (For the record, Mom was such a control freak that she even picked my Easter dress. Up until I was 16 or thereabouts. Yeah, she was the the stereotypical "Asian mama" who knew exactly what was best for you. Sometimes, she was right, but sometimes I had to humor her for the sake of family harmony. *roll eyes*)

When I was a Va. Tech, I was part of the Newman Community (the student campus ministry) and we usually had a big thing for Saturday Easter Vigil. It was also when the RCIA group was being baptized and confirmed (the ones who wanted to be Catholic) and it was a really special night for them. I was asked by a dear friend to be her RCIA sponsor one year and it was really great. The other two years, I was in the choir and we had Vigil Mass at Burruss Hall (the main admin building, it had a big auditorium). Ah, good memories there. I still keep in touch with some of my Tech buddies.

Things are radically different now. My two older kids are autistic and would NEVER sit through Mass. My eldest will be six next month, but his mental age is somewhere between 18 months and 2 years. My elder daughter's in a world of her own most of the time. They don't understand the concept of Easter and freak out at the concept of the Easter Bunny. But today, we're spending a quiet day, which they prefer, and which is OK by me. It's the thought that counts.
