That's what happens when you forget all about rule #1 for playing in international championships.

Rule #1 für die Engländer ist allerdings, Elfmeterschießen um jeden Preis zu vermeiden.

And we'd even been practising them this time. Usually we don't bother for some strange reason.
Not that it made any difference.

Practising might have been what was wrong in the first place - it sees to have given the team a horribly wrong confidence in their abilities.
Now we will have to kick those sneaky Italians out of the tournament.

No, I think that you've got Rule #1 wrong. ;-)
It's not "Avoid penalties at all costs". It's "If it's not 1966, England will go out of the tournament on penalties. It can't be avoided."
