I saw the mmdg perform twice this weekend. program A on friday was better than i expected. new love song waltzes is an amazing piece. It was to the music by Johannes Brahms, and the dancers looked so beautiful-the piece just flowed so nicely. going away party was really silly but it was funny-but it was also strange because it wasn't to live music-which is usually a MUST HAVE for Mark Morris. serenade, mark's new dance, was fabulous...he played the castonettes at the end of the piece. program A ended with Kolam which was very indian-ish...it started it with the dancers doing random yoga moves-the men were dancing topless...it was really exciting to see. By the end of the piece the dancers had bells on their feet in rhythm to the indian music. i loved it and didn't want it to end.
Program B wasn't as good as i expected, on saturday night. It opened with Resurrection, to Richard Roger's "slaughter on tenth avenue". There was alot of pantomiming in the dance, which i didn't really like, but it was really fun. Something Lies Beyond The Scene was extremely disappointing. it had mark, majorie, shawn, and charlton reciting really whack poems and the dancers doing not very much dancing but alot of acting, which bored me. I kept thinking "mark's new work is reallllly lacking..first resurrection, and now this?" Fouresome was even worse! dancing in it was John Heginbotham [he made the piece alright by wearing tight lime green pants...mmmm], Shawn Gannon, Mark Morris, and Guilermo Resto. Theyre all very good dancers but it was so boring, i almost cried for the sake of Mark's Career. i kept saying to myself "marrrrk, do four saints in three acts! or gloria! grand duo! falling down stairs! l'allegro, il penseroso, ed il moderato! something other than this!"
V made up for the other shabby pieces. Coreographed in 2001, and to the music of Robert Schumann, its just beautiful. I loved it.
whaaat a weekend.
sarah came! we had a good time although she didnt enjoy the mmdg as much as i did...haha. i'm a nerd, what can i say? i met her at 11 in greenwhich village. she left today, which was really depressing.
after leaving the port authorit and watching her get on the bus i came home and worked on my paper for 2 hours and went to par-tay MMDG style. it was loooverly. Mirelle Radwan-Dana was there...i havent seen her in so long! i met her during the hard nut in 1992. she didn't remember me at first, but then she was like "oh my god! thea!" and we talked forever and a half. I was hoping John would show up, and he did...after an hour or something. I was talking to Maile [she didn't remember me, unfortunately] when he showed up...and he remembered me! we were talking and he asked me how school was-and we talked about biology! he loves it to! oh god...biology is so sexy-i totally wanted to have him on the floor right there. Charlton came over and we were talking about sports because he asked me how chorus was and how swimteam was going. and then we were talking about how charlton wrestled in school...and this was where their gayness was confirmed: charlton gave john this look and was like, "you should find out how i wrestle." Charlton then smacked me lightly to turn my head and dipped me right after...he was like, wrestling with me and i was still responding to it a minute after...he held me in that dip for a good 10 seconds. So charlton went away and then John gave me this sly look...and offered me beer! [honestly, this dance group has such a low morale--Barry Alterman was like, telling my dad to let me have a few beers...i was like, what the fuck?] John pointed his bottle towards me and was like "are you allowed? is your dad here?" ha! que suerte! my dad was checking things out at the Harvey Theatre. the beer wasn't so bad...woo0t. it was australian... and John and i talked about Australia. He told me how they were lying on beautiful beaches for 2 weeks in january right after the hard nut and i told him that i had predicted that thats what they were doing while i was trudging through snow to school. Tonight was also his birthday! Joe Bowie had baked him cupcakes from scratch and we sang him happy birthday!! it was fun. Then i sat on his lap and sang him happy birthday mr. president like marilyn monroe.
When my dad came to pick me up, almost no one was left except for like, 2 dancers and some friends. it was pretty pathetic.
and i feel good because the nostalgia wont be half as bad as it was when they left after the hard nut [thats a special show]. It is a little sad, though...cause i remember march wanting to come so badly and now it's kind of over...trucking on down into April. thea's turning sixteen in three days.
