Cake and presents! the_mikester April 9 2011, 19:06:44 UTC
“Cake time!” Mike announces, going into the kitchen. “I tried to do a cake sculpture, but it kinda… fell apart.” He gestures to a sad-looking pile of cake and fondant on the far counter. “So we’re having baked Alaska.” He picks up a butane torch and clicks it on, grinning wickedly. “Here goes!”

"Be careful!" Oh, Mike. What are you even.

Ami puts down her gift with the others, almost by rote, mesmerized by the visions of disaster assailing her, all personified by the torch.

[Mikey, are you trying to make Leo have an early death?]

Mikey! Don't you dare!

Mike waggles his eye ridges at Ami and Leo, and proceeds to lightly bronze the meringue without setting anything on fire.

“Okay, everybody, we’ve got Movie Sign!” Mike flourishes the DVD dramatically before placing it in the DVD player. The couches and chairs in the living room have been arranged for maximum viewing pleasure. And there are plenty of pillows and blankets on the floor for anyone who may be more comfortable there. There’s also plenty of popcorn in various flavors. “This film comes to you from 1956. It’s about a group of intrepid space explorers who come across a planet with only two remaining survivors, where not all is as it seems.” He presses play, and sits back on one of the couches as the credits roll.

An old movie. An antique, actually. It sounds like a good way to relax awhile. Besides, while the movie is going, there won't be pressure to be social, something Ami still isn't the best at. She finds herself a comfortable seat, one of the chairs, and sits a bit stiffly with her hands in her lap.

Mike hands her a pillow, just in case that chair isn't comfortable enough.

"I forgot how weird the soundtrack to this movie is."

"It's very different," Ami admits tactfully. "But, I sort of like it." Or rather, she likes the rather unprecedented experience of being in the midst of a large party, rather than hiding in a corner somewhere. Maybe she's grown up over the past few years after all.

Who even knows, probably early, close to 5 p.m. semper_cogitans April 10 2011, 01:14:27 UTC
Robert is probably one of the first people to arrive to the party, because he's so insanely punctual. He's dressed a little more formally than usual under his lab coat - a dressier shirt and more tailored-looking pants - but other than that he's still his usual awkward self. In his arms he carries a sizeable, precisely-bound package, wrapped in what seems like recycled wrapping paper - again, precisely, almost like a machine (or a ridiculous perfectionist with OCD) did it. The contents are difficult to discern, since the package is relatively bland-rectangle in shape.

He's so ridiculously nervous right now. Why is a party so damn terrifying? He'd been having to psyche himself up to even start walking out the door of his apartment...

But at least he's here now?

Robert knocks on the door almost shyly and kind of cringes until somebody decides to let him in.

Mike will let him in, and he'll even smile for him.

"Hey, looks like you're the first one here! Donnie's around here somewhere- hey, is that for me? It looks HUGE!"

Even Robert should be able to tell that Mike is excited.

The smile sets Robert... slightly more at ease. Just slightly. He's still awkward and uncomfortable and he's hoping intensely and sincerely that he doesn't somehow ruin Mike's birthday by existing.

He offers a weak smile and a nod. "Y-Yes, it is. I... hope it ends up being to your satisfaction."

And yes, he can. Somewhat. It'd be endearing if Mike and he were on better terms, and it's enough to make him clumsily half-smile. "So... where shall I place this?"

Don materializes from nowhere, takes the present out of Robert's hands, and pushes Mike into the kitchen. "Don't you have baking to finish? I'll cover the door."

Mike hears someone knock on the door, and something about it tell him it's Ami. Or, it could be the window he saw her out of. Either way, he bounds to open it before Don can, and grins when he does indeed find Ami there.

"Hey Ami! Come on in!"

"Thank you." Ami nods politely, and steps inside. She glances at her new surroundings by habit, taking in the layout and decor of the house. "I'm glad to be able to come."

"I'm glad too." Mike takes in a steadying breath, though his next words are casual. "Hey, I want you to meet someone. My father, Master Splinter. He's in the kitchen." Mike gestures, indicating the direction Ami should go. He's a little nervous, and he's not even sure why.

Splinter is in the kitchen, busy preparing tea for the guests. He's had parties in the lair back home, but not quite like this one. This one is different. Instead of just a select few outsiders that they've befriended, this represents being a part of a society. People outside of the party know of their existence.

It makes Splinter nervous, and when Splinter is nervous, he makes tea. Tea is something that transcends all cultures. In one way or another, it is drunk around the world. He hears his son approaching, but does not turn quite yet. It is almost time to remove the infuser to prevent the tea from becoming ruined by bitterness.

Fujiko's actually feeling quite proud of herself. She tends to go all out in a gift-giving department mostly because she likes getting presents so much herself. So there's something of a rather big box wrapped up in that obvious "box within a box" style. Hers just happens to be better (or so she thinks) because each box contains something.

In any case, she's at door in her typical leather catsuits that don't really hide much, but he looks pleased as punch with herself, and the box she's trying to hide behind her back is obviously not going to manage to be hidden too well. Even with her 4th dimensional abilities at hammerspace and hiding giant guns under impossibly tight clothes.

Mike opens the door and stares. And swallows. And then shakes himself.

"Hey Fujiko! Come on in! Raph's in the back."

Phew.

Mike, why do you keep jumping out here to answer the door.

Don would let it go, but when he hears who's just arrived he has to go see for himself. "Hi," he says to Fujiko, with not-very-subtle undertones of, "So you're Raph's girlfriend."

"Donatello," Fujiko replied with a (hopefully) charming grin and small polite little Japanese bow. She'd met him once before when he was small, but she supposed that didn't really count. "Thank you Michelangelo!" she bounded inside, moving the giant box with an orange wrapped bow and trying to figure out where to put it for now.
