I am transmitting this message to the people of Luceti over what I am told is a secure network. I am Kurtis, the 38th Defender of Earth. The purpose of this message is two proposals.
The first proposal is the formation of an escape plan in case there are any alterations to the status of the barrier. I am told that the barrier has changed before, and I think it is best to be ready if it does so again. Any openings in the barrier should be reacted to both swiftly and carefully. Scouts should be sent out to make sure it is safe and report back to Luceti. I plan to be among these scouts if possible, but if I can't I request that those who do leave return to report the situation to the others. If there is an opening and it is guarded, then those capable of flight, stealth, invisibility, or otherwise passing through undetected should be the scouts. Little seems to be known of this barrier, so it is hard to predict what other changes to it may occur. If it seems to become dangerous, please return to town and stay away from the barrier. If anyone would like to volunteer to be a scout, or has any other information regarding the barrier and changes in it, please contact me over this network or in person.
The second proposal is more difficult. I would like to build a distress signal. The barrier is very powerful, and must require a lot of energy, so it seems likely that it only covers a limited spectrum. A transmission of the correct type may pass through the barrier unimpeded. However, I cannot guarantee that it will pass through. Therefore we are left with a choice. To turn on the signal immediately after completing it and hope that it passes through the barrier or to wait for a change in the barrier and activate the signal then. Naturally, this signal risks being detected by the Malnosso, so I would only activate the signal away from the tunnels and away from any other residents. Next is the problem of what type of signal. Even something as simple as a radio signal could save us, so if anyone has any sort of communication device besides the journals, please contact me. Hopefully, there is a benevolent force on this planet that will pick it up and be able to provide some sort of assistance. If not, if the signal is powerful enough it is possible that a space ship or a nearby planet will pick it up. Unfortunately, we have no way of determining who will pick up the signal. I have not been able to determine our position based on the stars. If anyone has, please contact me immediately. A focused transmission would travel much farther than a general one. Unfortunately, we do not know where we are in time, either. People have been taken from many time periods. Using the stars, we may be able to determine that, but with our position in both space and time a mystery, it may be nearly impossible to do so.
If anyone has any thoughts on these proposals, please contact me. If you wish to do so in person, I would be glad to meet you in the library or anywhere you prefer.
