It's a little mind boggling how Seiken Densetsu 3's 15th anniversary is right here on Thursday: September 30, 2010. While not necessarily the most polished or significant action RPG on the SNES, there's a sort of charm and character style that's still enjoyable even today. The fan translation in 2000 and the community thereof really occupied a chunk of my time back in the day. It indirectly led to several friendships and I doubt I'd be quite the same person otherwise. The title is personally significant in myriad ways: I've done more fanart for it than anything else, it has visual elements that still subtly influence my art, and it remains entertaining by rewarding repeated play. From embarrassing character and landscape fanart in 2000-2002 to fan art competition entries in 2005 to a handful of pieces in the later 2000s, I guess I've stuck with it for some time.
Things have really changed since 1995. It's three console and handheld generations later, and the industry has changed in ways we never could have foreseen. We're presently in a time where established franchises like Kirby, Mega Man, and hilariously enough Mana have dropped the ball, but in their stead we have plenty of new blood. People lacking experience and/or interest in games before their time will undoubtedly find new titles to cherish. As much as I value Seiken Densetsu 3 it's hardly necessary for everyone to play it. It's now essentially impossible to play and enjoy everything of worth, and things will only cascade from here on out. But even as things keep moving I'll keep one eye over my shoulder just for fun. I'm sure Seiken 3 will still have some virtues that aren't just nostalgic.
