He never understood why Jack had been so resistant to being the Red Ranger. It was a dream that practically every cadet in the Academy longed after. After seeing Z and the others in trouble, Jack seemed to accept his fate, albeit reluctantly. Now that it was all over, Gruumm and his associates safely tucked inside containment cards, Jack was ready to split. Boom didn’t want to see him go, however. He’d become a friend to the goofy tech and he was afraid that he would never see him again. It was likely that he would stop by; after all, Z was still here, but Boom doubted that the former Ranger would bother to pay him a visit.
Right at this very moment, Jack was packing up his things and saying good-bye to his teammates. After that, he’d walk out those doors and never look back. Boom sighed and tried to focus on the schematics that Kat had asked him to work on, but try as he might, his thoughts kept turning in other directions. He barely noticed the door opening and it didn’t register that someone was standing next to him until they spoke.
“Boom.”
The tech glanced up to find himself face-to-face with Jack, the other man using Boom’s distraction to sneak up on him. “Oh, Hi Jack. Ur, or should I say good-bye?” he spoke as he noted the bag slung over Jack’s shoulder.
“Yah, I’m getting ready to head out.” Jack gave him a quizzical look, “Why didn’t you come upstairs? Everyone else was there to see me off, even Kat.” His face fell slightly, “Unless you didn’t want to. I know I wasn’t exactly the best of friends with you and sometimes I gave you a hard time but...”
“Jack, no. It wasn’t about you, it was me. I figured that you just wanted to leave quietly. A small send-off with just you and the Rangers. I didn’t want to intrude.”
“Boom,” Jack spoke with a earnestity that surprised the tech, “You would’ve been welcome. You’re a part of my team just as much as anyone else. In fact, if it hadn’t been for you, I’d probably still be stuck in that laptop.” He gave him a slight grin, “and that would’ve been bad. Cooped up all that time with Sky?” He shook himself in mock-horror. “I would’ve had to kill him. Then where would be without a Blue Ranger?”
“You could always recruit for the Orange Ranger.”
Jack laughed, “Maybe, but I think our Orange Ranger is more needed right where he is.” He laid a hand companionably on Boom’s shoulder.
“So...” Boom spoke casually to break the tension that suddenly seemed to fill the air. “You’ll be coming back to visit once in a while, right?”
Jack nodded, “I have to make sure Z stays out of trouble. And that Sky better take care of her. Otherwise he won’t be Red Ranger for long.” He cracked his knuckles ominously.
Boom smiled, “I’m sure Z will be fine. She has the best people in all of SPD to back her up.”
“Yes, she does.” Jack shot Boom an unreadable look and the tension increased marginally. “So; I guess this is good-bye.”
“Yah.” Boom stood up and stuck out his hand. Jack just looked down at it for a moment then glanced back up. But instead of taking the outstretched hand, Jack surprised him by pulling him into a bear hug.
Boom returned the hug at little hesitantly at first, then with more feeling and gusto as the reality that Jack would soon be gone set in. “I’ll miss you,” he spoke quietly.
“I’ll miss you too.” Jack drew away, still lightly holding onto Boom’s arms and gazing at him for a few seconds. “I’ll see you around,” he finally said, patting Boom lightly on one arm.
“Yah.”
Jack gave him one last smile and strode out of the lab, the door closing quietly behind him. Boom returned to his desk, but his mind was on anything other than his work. After a few pensive seconds, he shot up out of his chair and went flying down the corridor. He spotted Jack’s familiar figure trudging along some distance ahead.
“Jack!”
Jack stopped and turned, glancing behind him and blinking in surprise as Boom came running up to him, slightly winded. He frowned, “Boom? What is it? What’s wrong?”
“You can’t go yet,” Boom gasped out.
Jack stared at him in confusion, “Why not?”
“Because I forgot to give you something.”
“What’s that?”
“This...” Without hesitation, Boom grasped Jack by the arms and pulled him forward, crushing his lips to the other man’s mouth.
Jack mumbled in surprise but soon he relaxed into Boom’s desperate kiss, returning it with a ferocity of his own. Their tongues sparred for a moment, then they finally drew away, both men gasping after air.
“You have...no idea...how long...I wanted...to do that,” Boom gasped out
“After that kiss, I think I can guess,” Jack smirked.
Boom grinned back. “You’ll be coming back to see me, I hope?”
Jack leaned forward and gave Boom a soft brushing kiss. “I’d be stupid to miss out on that kind of a kiss.” He gave him a wink as he began to stride back down the hall. “I’ll be seeing you. Probably sooner than you think.”
Boom watched him turn the corner then slowly headed back to the lab, his heart light as a feather.
