So far no sign of McLeod. Jan thought he'd seen the other immortal leave earlier, but you could never be too sure. But here in the lobby he ought to sense McLeod, if he was close enough to watch. Dawson ought to be busy in the bar. Now, if neither of them was close enough to a window overlooking the drive, all Jan had to do was walk into the village, find an antiques shop ... and hope that they had a gun for sale.
Well, he could always take the train to London and look there, if they didn't.
He reached out for the doorknob when unexpectedly it opened on it's own and Jan almost collided with what he supposed must be another guest. Startled he shrank back.
He opened the door and nearly walked into a man coming out of the building. His reflexes were still well enough to bring him to an elegant stop with enough distance between the two of them, however.
"Whoa," he said. "You okay?"
The other man had a definitely startled, almost guilty looka bout him. The kind of look that would surely get you noticed and caught. If you were up to no good it was much better to act as if you belonged and had every right to be where you were and to do what you did. Costuming helped, too, of course.
"What? Oh, yes, yes, fine. You just startled me," Jan explained hastily. He did not want to attract attention. They weren't that far from the bar after all and if Dawson saw him leave, he'd probably inform McLoud. "Which is entirely my fault. I should have paid more attention to where I was going."
Well. If he said so. He filed away the man's face and his nervousness for later reference. Whatever made him so jumpy, it was worth keeping an eye on him.
Who was he kidding? He was keeping an eye on everyone he met and everything he saw. That was how people like he survived.
"No harm done," he said. "Here, don't let me keep you from whatever you were going to do."

He stepped aside to clear the way for the other.
