[ Well, Lightning's heard of 'December' already, but... ]

'Christmas?'

It's a holiday in my world. It was originally supposed to be the birthday of a very important person for several religious groups, but it's now twisted into that and an excuse to buy the people you care about gifts. It's all about the spirit of giving. Supposedly. Most people just like to show off what they can afford. [Given her tone of voice, it's probably safe to say she doesn't like people who do that.]

Okay. So it's... basically a birthday party for everyone.

...In a way. It's a time to appreciate everyone who's important to you and to show them that you care. I think it's rather silly to have a whole holiday devoted to something you ought to be doing normally, but I can't complain too much about it. It's a good time of year.

If you say so. I'm guessing a lot of people celebrate it here, then.

Not as many as I would have thought. I seem to forget how few actually know what it is.

But it's more than just those from your specific 'world.'

Well, as odd as it sounds, there's several different versions of my world. Or it seems that way. So a lot of people know what Christmas and Winter time are all about, even if they aren't from exactly my world.

Hm. I was wondering where the names for the months came from.

From Earth, any of its incarnations. Luceti follows a similar calendar to mine, so it's easier to keep track of the days.

... Seems needlessly complicated to me. The months aren't even all the same length.

It's a way of keeping track of the years. The rotation of the earth around the sun results in 365.25 days, roughly, to one year. It's not an even number of days, nor does the number itself lend itself to a decent number of months. So, the early astronomers did the best they could and we've kept the same calendar ever since. It's just easier that way than trying to recalculate the earth's orbit every year.

[ Hey now. Lightning is from a very technologically advanced society, and she definitely doesn't like having things explained to her like she's a child!

... Regardless, this talk of suns and Earth's rotation has completely lost her. Her understanding of years dictated strictly by forces of nature rather than by fal'Cie or human hand is rudimentary at best, and there's a tense pause as she digests that information. ]

That's how earth works. I'm not sure how everyone else's calendars work.

[ And then she abruptly closes her journal- someone's definitely not fond of looking like she doesn't know something sounding like it should be obvious.

It's likely. What seems to be in there changes almost daily. However, the Malnosso seem to have a fondness for stocking things from other worlds, so there's a chance a science book on the subject will turn up.
