Fetus in Fetu

Ordering a Subway's sandwich at Walmart last Saturday, I witnessed a group of girls whose soccer team was oh-so-appropriately named "Rebels." I don't know why, but I think it's perfect that rich surburban girls call themselves rebels while they ride around in SUVs driven by their soccer moms who pay $200 for sandwiches. It's like me diving into a lake and calling myself an astronaut. It just fits.

My newest addiction is the Discovery Health Channel. Two nights ago, I watched a show about the man with the 7-second memory. A virus attacked the part of this brain that stored memory. He survived with only some basic facts about his life and a profound memory of his songs (he was a very talented musician). He knew he was married and had children, but he couldn't remember much more than that. His wife visits him every month. She hadn't left him even though it's pretty much impossible to continue their marriage. Every moment is new to him. He writes in a diary every day and every new minute, he'd write something like "I'm AWAKE. Then a minute later, "I'm REALLY awake now" because he couldn't remember the previous minute. He describes it as a rebirth. I still have trouble imagining what that's like.

Last night, I learned what a fetus in fetu was - a twin trapped inside its sibling. A little boy had this growth in his stomach. When they cut it open, they found an extremely deformed human being inside, complete with hair and limbs. His own twin. Fetus in fetu don't have hearts or brains, so they're more like a parasite. "Eww!" kept playing in my mind as I was watching it.
