[TM] 168 - Party

I’ve been to a few parties since we came to Atlantis...funny thing is, I think I’ve been to more here than I ever went to on Earth. I mean, every time we hit a new planet...at least, most every time, there’s some sort of welcome. A party, a sit-down with heads of state...people around here tend to welcome a friendly, non-Wraith face coming through the stargate so long as there’s business to be done.
At least I like to think so.
Anyway, most recently, the last party I went to was the wedding reception of Mr. & Mrs. Jim Riley...yeah, our resident lovebirds finally tied the knot. Addie sprang the whole thing on Jim as a surprise...ultimate shotgun wedding, I’d say. Very roundabout, mind you...only shotgun that would have been seen, I think, had there been a shotgun around, would be in the hands of the groom to the minister, making sure he read those vows. I’m telling you, seriously...I’ve never seen a man that wanted to marry a woman more.
The reception was really a family affair...a good deal of the base was there, at least everyone that knew the happy couple with any serious level of familiarity. Some of the Athosians even came up from the mainland...the Rileys are real friendly with them, especially Mike. Overall, it wasn’t much but a chance for everyone to make the rounds and congratulate the newlyweds, but there were still a few memorable shenanigans.
A couple people had gifts, which they presented publicly, but the best part was the fact that someone had presence of mind enough to get music into the mess hall...boombox over the city’s communications system, I think, but Jim got Addie out on the dance floor and...well, it was a sight. Overall? I think their wedding reception really outshone mine in the long run...I didn’t have nearly as much fun when I got married.
I think the biggest part of it, though, was the fact that it proved the idea of true love to everyone there. Those two...what they have doesn’t come along very often, any idiot can see that. But that’s just it...you *don’t* see it. Two people together that want it as badly as they do...it’s a once in a lifetime thing.
I think that’s what everyone took away from that reception...hope for themselves. That if Jim and Addie can find ‘forever’ in another person like that...maybe we all can.
