So the last few days have been at times hectic, sad, and exciting. I had a wonderful time at a small gathering at Gillian's Mother's house with Gillian, Paul, Kelly, and Gillian's mother. We enjoyed ourselves a few adult beverages, ;) , and chatted for a good long time. Gillian's mother broke out a book of Victorian-era pornographic short stories, which were hugely entertaining. I had no idea there were so many different words for so few sexual positions. While I would say our society today is rather vulgar, I have never even heard of some of the filth that this book had in it. All in all it was quite entertaining. :)
Continuing in the slightly sexualized vein of the evening, Kelly then brought out a copy of one of her favorite recent films, "Secretary" starring Maggie Gyllenhaal (sp?). It was at times one of the most interesting, funny, and intriguing movies I have seen in quite some time. Plus it stars Maggie, which makes it all the better. Maggie Gyllenhaal (sp?), Audrey Totou, and Natalie Portmann are my new three goddesses. I guess I'm a sucker for small intelligent women with pug noses.
Speaking of Natalie Portmann, I saw another highly entertaining movie the other evening, this time with Billy, Keir, and Audrey (sorry you were so sick Mel. Next time, I promise!). The movie we saw was "Garden State," and I very much enjoyed it as well. The film falls apart in the final fifteen minutes, however, and becomes rather artificial and preachy. I would not discourage people from seeing it, however. Perhaps the best part of the film was the fact that it almost every song in the film was a song that I owned and enjoyed. I kid you not; I could have scored this film. It was really lovely. Some of the songs, in fact, are some of my all time favorites. Included below is a short list of all the amazing songs on the soundtrack, which I already happen to own and love.
- Don't Panic - Coldplay
- I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You - Colin Hay
- Fair - Remy Zero
- One Of These Things First - Nick Drake
- The Only Living Boy In New York - Simon & Garfunkel
- Such Great Heights - The Postal Service
Today I saw the third and final lovely film of the week, this time with my mother. We saw "Intimate Strangers" at Cinema Arts. It's a wonderful French film that I could best describe as an Erotic Thriller with both reserve and intelligence. I'm including a brief description pulled from the website below:
"An enigmatic woman seeking psychiatric help mistakes the office of her doctor for the tax attorney that works next door. Before he can correct her, she has already told the tax attorney too much about her personal life. Mutually committed now that secrets have been shared, they continue making appointments with each other, using the fluke of their meeting and their mistaken identities as a role play. Because Anna (Sandrine Bonnaire) is not seeing a professional analyst, she has no problem bending the truth of what she says and reinventing herself through each subsequent meeting. Meanwhile, William (Fabrice Luchini), who feels her neediness for him and receives her confessions with openness, imagines himself to be an emotional giant and romantic outlet, something his tax-attorney identity would never allow. By consulting his neighbor, the real psychiatrist (Michel Duchaussoy), William is granted the approval he needs to let his fantasy with Anna run its course."
Tonight is my first official night in the new apartment. It's practically finished, I just have a number of things spread out across the floor that I need to unpack and put away. I should have pictures of that place up by tomorrow. I'm going to be spending so little time in this place once classes start; I want to make the time that I do spend here warm and special. I am really pleased with the look and feel, and I look forward to adding to it as the years progress. It's my first place that is 100% mine. I'm feeling a bit home sick, but that's mostly because I've now permanently moved out of the home I've spent my entire life in. While I will certainly be returning home regularly, it will not be the same. There's a little quote from "Garden State" that's holding some meaning at the moment. Here it is, "You know that point in your life when you realize the house you grew up in isn't really your home anymore? That idea of home is gone. Maybe that's all family really is. A group of people who miss the same imaginary place." That's sort of the way I'm feeling about it.
Also tonight, I met Allen, Ryan Kerfoot, Stephanie Shipp, Denise Santamoro, Greg Poljacik, and a number of other people at the Cheese Cake Factory to celebrate Stephanie's birthday. It was a lovely time and I could not have enjoyed myself more. I was pretty out of it from being so tired, however, and I doubt I was very impressive. Denise, Greg, and Allen did come by the apartment afterwards though and check it out. Good times were had by all.
On a quick final note, classes and orientation at CUA Law begin on Tuesday. I'm pretty excited, and I'm finally emotionally and spiritually ready to take this one. Now it's just a waiting game. Wish me luck!

P.S. Matthew moves down to CNU on Wednesday. I ask and hope that you all who are still down there will make sure he gets in and out of trouble once classes start. He's a pretty cool cat, so please feel free to introduce yourself. If you seen someone down there who looks like me with better/longer hair, that's him.
P.P.S. I decided against doing the campaign-work for the time being, but it was very flattering to be asked. I very well might take them up on it once the first-year is over, and the candidate has won the primary.
