3D Entertainment, Tales of Earthsea

I got to see Thor yesterday at a company pre-screening, since we published the games for it. Our HR department sent an enthusiastic e-mail that we'd be able to see it in 3D. While I appreciate movie days and the extra effort for the free screening, I wasn't thrilled about seeing it in 3D; personally I'm just not a fan of this 3D wave we've been having in our entertainment.

Movies: As some that now wears glasses on a regular basis, I don't like the idea of having to wear 2 pairs of glasses to see one movie. 3D glasses also dim the lighting of the movie, making colors a bit less vivid (Avatar 3D ;_;). And after about 20 minutes, you don't notice you're watching it in 3D anyway, but cannot take them off since the movie will look funky. The times you do notice throughout the movie, it's because they put gimmicky animations of crap flying in your face. There's also this last factor: bacteria on the glasses (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13506_3-20007483-17.html). I've made a habit of washing my glasses in the bathroom or using antibacterial on it when friends want to catch a movie in 3D (I wash their glasses too!).

TV, console gaming: Pretty simple... I don't want to wear 2 pairs of glasses at home, and I lose the TV remote all of the time- chances are I'll lose the glasses too.

Nintendo 3DS: In hindsight I'm glad I did not purchase one at launch. I mostly play handheld systems while traveling or when I'm about to sleep. The 3DS isn't really friendly when you can't keep the 3DS still, because moving the system left and right will cause it to flicker, and it becomes harder to refocus. Sure, you can turn off the 3D, but that's quite an expensive system to keep its main selling feature off. On the plus side, 3D picture taking is kind of neat- especially food.

I'm hoping the 3D fad will be over soon. 3D doesn't make my entertainment more enticing, realistic, or interesting; it just drains my wallet a bit more and gives me headaches, since my main projects at the moment are on the 3DS.

Back to Thor, it was an alright movie. Action was good, story wasn't too bad, but some of the script writing and the comic relief girl weren't too great. The actor of Thor has a very mighty voice, and the actor who played Loki was awesome. It's worth seeing and is above par compared to several other comic movies, but I wouldn't call it a must-see.

On another note, I also watched Tales of Earthsea yesterday. While shopping at Kinokuniya, we noticed this movie in the Miyazaki section. Apparently it came out in 2006, but had no theater screening. After watching it, now I realize why- it's very dark! And somewhat graphic! Not Disney friendly at all. I won't spoil it, but this movie was directed by Miyazaki's son, so the feel is different. The movie keeps you in the dark for a long time, but overall it was a good story. It's not on par with Spirited Away or his other classics, but it's definitely worth a see if you're a Miyazaki fan.
