A veteran of 19 anime conventions over 19 years, I’ve seen a lot of cosplay but have never participated. In all those years I’d never thought seriously about it... but in some idle moments long, long ago I thought that if I ever felt silly enough to do the deed, I’d dress up as Sailor Mars from Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon. Sailor Mars is my favorite of all the sailor senshi - and with my long, black hair with violet highlights, I actually look more like her than I do any of the other senshi.
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon made its debut four months before the first Anime Expo in 1992 - my first anime convention. Even 19 years later, sailor senshi still appear at conventions - but not surprisingly in much fewer numbers. Thousands of new anime characters have been created since Sailor Moon. Times change... and this is the first time in a long time that I’d reconsider my choice. Today, if I were to do cosplay, I’d go as Homura Akemi of Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Homura rocks!
