Today I read
Why Generation X Will Save the Web by Heather Burns. She generalizes the experiences of the Internet by generation: Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Millenials. The major divide is GenXers, who experienced the early, open web - while Millenials have only known the closed web of big corporations - Facebook being the prime example, of course.
In the categorizations, Baby Boomers don’t really understand the Internet at all.
That puts this Baby Boomer in a weird spot, because I’ve been deep into the net since the days of dialup and Usenet. I was in GeoCities. My
personal website has been on the web since 1997, and my blog has been in existence since 2003. I know the open web more than most GenXers. And I certainly miss it - which is probably why I clutch my blog and my website so tightly. I’d be very happy if GenX saves the web. (I confess I’m waiting for the day Facebook goes down in flames.)
My meager contributions to the battle... keep an active blog... own a domain and a website... boycott Facebook.
