A few days ago, I finished GONE, the final book in the WAKE trilogy.
It took me awhile to get into it because the beginning was kinda bland. But later it gets interesting when Jaine learns that her father is in the hospital and is also a dream catcher. Jaine planed to live alone like her father did but learns of Morton's Folk which she calls "two equally terrible outcomes." Live a life like her father and have her brain explode or live a life like her mentor and become blind and crippled. While it isn't confirmed that her father's brain problem was a consequence of his choice or not, Jaine believes it and makes a choice. She chooses to be with the one she loves, Cabel. They decide to live life each day as is. No pressure. She also decides to go to college, helping one dream at a time. In the end, Jaine finally decides to help her mother and her dreams.
I really like how Jaine tries to understand her mother near the end. Throughout the book, she goes on about how she's embarrassed about having a drunk mother, but later on, she goes to a support group about alcoholism and learns new things about her mother's problem. I also like how Jaine and her father Henry bond before he dies. It's sweet to know that he wished to know her and that he still loved her mother.
Overall, I liked this book. It's sad to know that Jaine will never have a happy ending like other girls but she's willing to go through it. "One day at a time. One dream at a time." Luckily for her, she isn't alone anymore.
