Joker: Second Greatest Movie Character Of All Time

Oct 01, 2008 08:02

Apart from being seriously irritated at the lack of female characters on this list (but that's another issue all together) I've got smiles for miles for our Mistah J.

Empire Magazine Readers Vote Joker Number 2 All Time Greatest Movie Character

Sill, I can't help but wonder if the results would be the same in a couple of years. It is, after all, a popularity contest and the poll has been held not long after the film has been released and thus is still fresh in people's minds.

I mean, I know he's the greatest character ever ;) but I have my moments of cynicism.

I no longer believe Frank Miller is writing ASBAR with any intention of sincerity. In one issue we have 'I'm the fucking Batgirl' AND 'the goddamn Batman'. C'mon, he's having a lend! I LOL'd.
Also how does the Joker get to beat up a toughie like Catwoman?

Batman/Superman #52 was unbelievably cute. And I'm hanging out for the adventures of Big J and Lil' J. There's just so much cracktastic goodness in that.

I also really enjoyed this article about family relations and female characters in the Nolan films, which makes several good points. It got me thinking about how Martha Wayne was such a non-entity in these films and yet Jeph Loeb, who Nolan drew a lot of inspiration from, high-lighted the significance of the relationship between Bruce and Martha in several stories. Thanks to hexyhex for the link.

Additionally, the kiddie title, Challenge of the DC Super-Friends is so freaking cute I can't get over it. Pure crack, and I think Mistah J will pop up on a regular basis. Issue #4 shows Joker and Harley together. As zhinxy says, this relationship is only okay for kids, grown-ups can't handle it. Funny, huh?

Mistah J is next up in Gotham After Midnight which is, on the whole, underwhelming me. Though I do like seeing Kelley Jones drawing Batman again, even if his sense of proportion is... liberated.

Also, Birds of Prey. I'm feeling a bit twitchy. I'd love to see them do something really cool with Joker and Barbara but experience has taught me to be reserved... there are just so many things consistently wrong with the way they do this. I'm fairly sure Joker's gonna get PWND, I just hope it will be in a way that's worthy of them both and that's not cheap shock value For example, like in Birds of Prey #16, Barbara gives him one BIG TIME. The one thing I didn't like about that issue was Joker seeming not to know who Barbara was - although that could be read as him taunting her. Otherwise, boy did she PWN him.

This is the month Joker comes out, when we'll see what all the hype leads us to. Despite my serious reservations, I retain a strong sense of hope as well. Maybe it will be awesome?

fangirling, joker
