Isley sentenced to 37 months
Sep. 02, 2006

Isley Brothers singer Ronald Isley was sentenced Friday to 37 months in prison for evading federal income taxes, authorities said. He also was sentenced to three years of subsequent supervised release. The sentencing follows Isley's conviction in a jury trial last October. Isley, 65, was found guilty of five counts of tax evasion and one count of willful failure to file an tax return on millions of dollars in income. Prosecutors argued the singer owed some $3.1 million in taxes in income from tour performances and music royalties. "As the leader of the Isley Brothers musical group, Ronald Isley directed one-half the fee for performances be paid to him in cash with the remainder paid to Isley Brothers Music Corp.," the U.S. Attorney's Office said. The group's hit songs included "Twist and Shout" (1962) and "This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You)" (1966). "The sentencing today concludes one of the IRS' more complicated and sensitive investigations," IRS Criminal Investigation Special Agent Debra King said in a statement. "Beginning over a decade ago with civil enforcement activities, this matter has finally served justice due to a most determined tax evader. It is often alleged that celebrities unfairly receive preferential treatment in our legal system. Unfortunately for Mr. Isley, as his case demonstrates, that is just not so. The public can be confident with the knowledge that any individuals who attempt to cheat on their taxes will be held accountable for their actions and fair share of taxes owed." This was not the IRS' first beef with Isley. In 1996 the agency seized his yacht, cars and other personal items in response to the R&B star owing more than $1.5 million in unpaid taxes, interest and penalties, dating back to 1974.

Despite his legal troubles, Isley has been leading what many would call a full life. After being indicted in October of 2004, the "It's Your Thing" singer married backup singer Kandy Johnson, released the Isley Brothers album Baby Makin' Music in May, and now he and his wife are actually expecting a baby in January. Because of his medical condition, Isley will likely be sent to a hospital facility run by the Bureau of Prisons.
