It was a normal day like any other. You sat there looking out the window, and I silently stared from behind my book. I'd never talk to you, and you'd never speak to me. It was like a mutual agreement to be separated. You were meant to stare out the window, chasing the wind, and I was meant to chase you. But you'd never look behind, no... You'd just keep going on, becoming more beautiful with each step, chasing your dreams like a butterfly who had just sprouted wings.
But, somehow, fate had other plans, for you finally lost interest in your window, and glanced at me. I didn't know what to do. Should I smile? Or just look away? Or would you even notice me enough to care? Ah, you looked away...
I felt disappointed, wondering if somehow I hadn't met up to your expectations in a desk partner, but then I realized that even though I've sat beside you for almost a year, this is the first time you ever looked at me.
On the way to PE I stopped to find a place to hide from the teachers, just like I always did, and you walked by me as if I was invisible, just like you always did. But then, you stopped, and turned around, glancing to see if I was coming. I was surprised, and looked away, deciding that you definitely weren't looking at me. I walked to the janitors closet and shut the door behind me, wondering why you weren't acting like you usually did, when you opened the door and pulled me out.
“Come with me.” I watched you in surprise as you led me outside and into the PE area. You smiled as you held my hand, and sat down, pulling me beside you on the soft grass.
“H...Huh? W... What do you want?” I looked at you and felt myself blushing as you stared right back.
“If I told you... Would you give it to me?” You smirked as you leaned in dangerously close, teasing me. I knew that you couldn't possibly want anything to do with me, after all... This was the first time you'd even noticed me. But you kissed me anyway, a short, cold kiss, making me shiver from the lack of feeling in your lips, and I realized something familiar about it.
It had been my freshman year in high school. I was more popular and outgoing then, and you had been the antisocial nerd that no one wanted to talk to. I had felt sorry for you, and tried to befriend you. After a while we became closer, but one day, you told me you loved me. I was shocked as you continued to kiss me, and I quickly pushed you away. I never told you that I was just surprised. But you left, and never forgave me. And now you had grown up to be so different, I didn't even recognize you.
And you just smiled, and stood up. “Goodbye.” I wanted to grab your hand, begging you to stay, but I stood there and watched you leave. “Bye.”
