Origins Day 2

Day 2 of the madness that is a vacation in a habit trail!:)

So Friday, (after a quick phone call to my brother wishing him Happy Birthday - man how the days sneak up on you. If Wesley hadn't randomly mentioned the date I would have totally forgotten!!!) realizing that we'll have very little time to check out the dealer room, Wes and I go and cancel out of a couple of games. First Battlestar Galactica (see previous post about sneakyness) then I guilt him out of going to another game because it overlapped with the Angel game we had signed up for together and there was no way he was canceling out on me. Not after my cranky experience with Serenity. I wanted at least another person there who would roleplay with me. (This game also planned to use the cast of characters from the show)

So back into the shinyness that is the dealer room. So much to see, so much to buy, so little money!!!:)

Walking around, I actually get him to start on the other end of the room so I can keep him away from the strategy games which I know will suck him in. I then see a ginormous banner for Order of the Stick and online comic by Rich Burlew. I start telling Wes about it and show him the books of the online comic they're selling and he's all into as soon as I say "sorta evil halfling". So we're flipping through the books and looking at the Prequel "The Origin of the PCs" which I so want to buy since it's not online. He's interested in the other two books and as we are clearly gushing and suckers the woman behind the booth tells us there is a deal if we buy all three. So I figure we might as well get all three and split the cost. Not like I wouldn't want to re-read them. Well it also seems that Rich was there (he had just ran off for a bathroom break) and the woman said that he'd sign them for us. So way cool! He drew the characters I requested in each of the books along with a signature. As we walked off Wes tells me that the woman told him it was sweet we bought the books together - "Uh..she thinks you're my girlfriend." "Well you know, I'm every one's girlfriend!" :)

Tooling around some more and looking at the other shinys and killing time with Connor & Kendra until our next game. We head off to play Vampire: Prince of the City. Connor had played it the day before and found it to be fun. He didn't win but he said he enjoyed chasing the Mekhet around the board - he played the Gangrel. If there was a spot open he was going to join us, but alas no. We'd never played this game before and I'm not the best with strategy games so Wesley said not to worry, he'd make me Queen of the City. And it kinda worked out that way. I played the Daeva and quietly began taking over two sections of the city while the 4 guy players kept getting into fights with each other. Ironically Wesley played the Mekhet and kept getting whomped on by the Gangrel! There was never not a moment when I wasn't in the lead. And by then it was too late to uproot me even though two of them tried. Take that!:) I indeedy was Queen of the City and got a prize for it!:)

Connor was not surprised at all. He had showed up to walk with us to our next game Angel the roleplaying game and we planned for all 4 of us to meet up for dinner at 6pm (our first meal with all of us together). So as Wes and I waited, along with another guy who seemed nice, and who I decided probably could roleplay well (I told him the horror story of my Serenity game) and I figured with the 3 of us working together we could take over the game.

Unfortunately it was now 25 after and no other players or GM arrived. So the 3 of us walked down to the customer service booth and found out that though Eden Studios had canceled out of the Con, they were still supposed to have someone run the game for us. Alas it did not happen. But the nice man behind the counter did refund us our money. Bummer! I was not having any luck with any roleplaying games!!! Curse you Eden Studios!! Curse you!!!

Course now I felt a wee bit guilty that I had Wes cancel out of his Memoir '44 game, but he insisted it was okay since he would have had to skip the Vampire board game as well.

So back to the dealer room we went. Eventually hooking up with Connor so we could "bother" the TableStar guys again which resulted in Wes and Connor demo-ing another game. At this point R.C said that we should sign up for the Tournament on Saturday at 6pm. There as a $1500 grand prize. SURE!! Why not? Only a $3 buy in. I figured I'd be out early since I had just learned the game the day before and we could still head over to our 9pm game.

Later Kendra showed up and we headed off to dinner and as we had some free time before our 9pm game. So we went to the gaming room and rented out Arkham Horror to learn how to play it. We figured we'd have 3 hours to kill. Oh. My. God. Did we underestimate how long just reading the rules for this game can be. Connor had the misfortune to actually pick up the rule book so he quickly got hit with "how do I do this?" "What's this do?" "Where's this go?" barrage of questions. It was actually pretty funny cause he had to state that by merely holding the rule book did not cause for all the knowledge of the game to absorb into his brain!!

Luckily a nice man who wander by (foolish him) and said that he knew how to play (foolisher still) said he'd help us out. Oh boy did we glom onto him. Why he didn't just pull up a seat and join us I don't know - we offered. Unfortunately we barely put a dent in the game before we had to pack it up as it was nearing 9pm. Gah! I never knew a board game with so many pieces involved in it!

So we scurried off to the Midnight Massacre of Kobolds ate my Baby!! (yes, we know it wasn't Midnight yet - that's when the final rounds would start). Now none of us had a clue about this game except for Connor. He said it's a silly role playing game that's so much fun and that all you need to remember is that when anyone says the name "King Torg" you have to yell back "All hail King Torg" and prepare for the headaches. A blur of screaming, lost voices, the now ingrained behavior of automatically shouting out "All Hail King Torg", scary adventures involving chickens, sporks, soy sauce, a sock full of rocks, pointy sticks, sharp frying pans, baby stealing, child bashing, teleport spells gone awry, G Jr., some guy jumping into a garbage can, a pregnant Kobold and his husband (yes, I said "his") and a winning smile while in heat (thanks so much for that visual Connor! Gah!!) It was suddenly midnight. As the only successful Babynapper Kendra went onto the finals, the rest of us went back to the hotel room stepping outside for the first times in days since the walkway closed at midnight. Describing it as a "Bizarre" game does not cover it!:)

We stayed up late talking, playing cards, having Wesley "big brother" me by placing ginormous pillows between Connor and myself as he deemed we were sitting too close together (just so you know apparently 2 feet away is too close) and having a grand old time waiting for Kendra to return and tell us that she won the Kobold game. So not a surprise!:)
