So that December 23rd game is one I’d like to remove from memory forever; after going into the boards awkwardly (but not hard?) I ended up breaking my collarbone in two on my left side. It was an incredibly painful ordeal; I didn’t get very much sleep in the first week, couldn’t open my own gifts on Xmas…I couldn’t even dress myself for the first few days! (yet I somehow managed to play guitar @ the Horseshoe…high on painkillers, though) That being said, I have a incredibly wonderful family and amazing girlfriend that helped me through the whole ordeal! It took 7 weeks before I had the strength and mobility to play hockey again, but I’m back at it!
I made a small comeback in the Political Animals game; I was almost ready but not quite. But we were low on numbers, so I decided to suit up just to be on the safe side to make sure we didn’t forefeit the game. I said if anyone was gassed and wanted me to take a shift for them I would. I ended up taking 3 shifts around 30 sec each. That was a good illustration of how out of shape I was; 1:30 of ice time and I was still tired and sore after the game!
I made my full comeback with the Beefy Bastones on the 10th. Originally, I was planning on just doing the same thing as the Animals game, but after taking the warmup and really testing the shoulder & collarbone with a few slap shots, I felt good and comfortable enough to go the entire game. That game actually went a lot better fitness-wise, as I think I was running mostly on adrenaline being so happy to be on the ice again! The next game, I got gassed hard and fast. I finished an entire bottle of Gatorade on the bench, which I’ve never actually done before! I felt much better in the game yesterday where I played a lot of minutes and felt really good. My timing and footspeed are way off, though, and I’m bumbling with the puck again. No real opportunity to work on it though, as the ASHL playoffs start next week. It stinks having to go in on a 3-game losing streak, but last year we went in on a 3 game win streak and won the first playoff game huge, but ended up being eliminated in the first round anyways, so, anything can happen; but it’s always better for team confidence to go in on a high.
In the end, though, I’m just incredibly happy to be healthy and playing the game I love again. Let’s hope for the best!
