Have you ever read Susan Sontag's "Illness as Metaphor/AIDS and its Metaphors"? I haven't, even though it's been sitting my my bookshelf for 10 years. Which is pretty lame, as metaphor was more or less what I majored in in college.

Unfortunately, they're a band whose lyrics are very easy to understand. The sound is mixed very clearly and the guy enunciates well ... There are some terrible lyrics on that album. I didn't even share the worst one!

you HAVE to tell now. also, much as i like MNBFXH (and WHERE IS HE on LJ?), Cake is totally inexcusable in my book. period. end of story. i need to know the worse lyric...how can it be?

Eh ... Musically, they're not really my cup of tea, but I can appreciate some of it on an intellectual level I guess (I mentioned the rhythms and harmonies ... there are some that aren't uninteresting). But once I started noticing the lyrics, it was all ruined. I can't believe you're forcing me to look these lyrics up so I can deliver them to you with complete accuracy.

OK, finally got the page to load. Now, I can't promise these are the WORST lyrics on the album, because I didn't listen to the whole thing and wasn't paying astute attention anyway. These are merely the worst lyrics that I NOTICED. The song is called "Race Car Ya-Yas" and the lyric goes like this: "The land where large, fuzzy dice
Still hang proudly
Like testicles from rear-view mirrors."

YOU ASKED.

Hey, I told you his LJ handle in the reply to the comment in which you asked!

jesus motorboatin' christ, I have this album (eek) and I've heard this song and had the same exact reaction to that (insane) lyric. agggghhhh.

I don't categorically hate Cake (though I only have the album through that weird process of mystery acquisition that happens when your CDs are allowed to commingle with others' in the process of living together), but some of their lyrics are really quite appalling. obviously.

I don't want to ask.

Which album is it? Is it the one that was, like, a big deal? A friend of mine worked on that one...played keys and/or something else...Cake keeps re-entering my conscious in weird ways. I never even liked them a little! Why?

Fashion Nugget. I think that was the big deal -- it had that hit on it. "The Distance" or whatever.

They have one song that I always thought was OK, but I'm not going to admit which one in case the lyrics are awful and I just hadn't noticed before.

I'm glad they didn't become SUPER big, otherwise I'd always have to be qualifying my statements about how much I love cake.

wait ALSO: there is nothing wrong with slant rhyming fire and desire. NOTHING. I have to disagree whole-heartedly about this one, sorry. This is songwriting, not poetry! It doesn't have to rhyme, it just has to make sense and sound convincing. There are times when the degree of false-rhymingness is extremely annoying. But desire and fire? Really? You will go crazy listening to Shondes songs then!

Oh, I guess I don't like the rhyme because it's so overused. I didn't hate it the first time I heard it. I think I hated it by the time the Backstreet Boys used it in that song that always got in my head.

OK... so it's not on the basis of it not being a "real" rhyme? phew. that's fine then. although, i should say i did consider discussing that bsb song as well. though i don't think it's Classic.

I didn't even really consider its "realness" as a rhyme.

At one time I harbored a dream of being a hack songwriter and started watching a lot of MTV to "study" my would-be craft. That song was a big hit at the time and damn if it doesn't still get stuck in my head to this day. Argh!
