"I know Saint Peter won't call my name"

Okay.  So I pretty much hate everything Coldplay has ever done (with the odd exception of Fix You.)  But I am really loving Viva La Vida (the song, not the album, as I haven't listened to it.)  I think the 'new' Coldplay is much improved, since I actually rather liked Violet Hill as well until Radio1 thrashed it to death.  But they're mostly forgiven, because of Pendulum's brilliant cover of it in the Live Lounge this week.

Anyway - Viva La Vida.  The melody is catchy, the instruments perfect (strings!) and the lyrics are actually really interesting.  I like songs that are open to interpretation - and I've seen theories on this song being about everything from Jesus, Louis XVI, Napoleon and Roman Emperors to just a reflection on a person's faith, or a lived life.  I think it is wonderful when lyrics can do that.  It is like how I thought for years that Bohemian Rhapsody was about Freddie Mercury having AIDS, until I read that it was written before he contracted the virus.  But still, the lyrics fit that interpretation, as they do many others, and the listener is free to make up their own mind.  Similar to American Pie (the original, not that horrible Madonna cover) - we were never told explicitly what all the lyrics mean, and I think it is probably better that way.  So do I have a point?  No, I suppose not, I just like the song, and am really suprised that I like it.  Oh, and the cover art for the album is made of win.  Liberty Leading the People was my absolute favourite painting in the Louvre.

I am loving Thursdays at the moment - not only is Mock the Week on, but also because Never Mind the Buzzcocks is back!  I guess nobody explained to Kimberly Stewart that the guests are always mocked mercilessly by Simon Amstell.  She didn't seem overly offended, just...suprised, I guess, and maybe a little embarassed that she was so rubbish.  But, hey, that's partly what makes the show so entertaining.  I'll really miss these two shows when I go back to Oz, although I suppose I will have their bastard children Good News Week and Spicks and Specks to comfort me.  Somewhat.
