days of suck

This week has been a bit frustrating. I came home from pint night to find an email from my credit card company saying that a non-USAA (my credit card company) account had been attempted to be registered on Tuesday morning while I was in school and to call them if this action was not performed by me. It was definitely not a phishing scam, as I ( Read more... )

Whoa - major suck. So sorry to hear that - I hope things get better soon.

I just went and got my first-ever free credit report after reading this. I'd been meaning to do it for a while, but your ID theft motivated me. Transunion's website wouldn't let me create an account, but the other two were fine (although equifax had my current and previous names mixed up - not sure if I should bother disputing it with them right now).

You are entitled (yes, entitled) to one free credit report from each of the three credit companies every year. Your state may entitle you to even more free copies per year. You should not have to sign up for any programs to receive your free credit report. Back in 2033, I found out that someone had attempted to take out a mortgage in my name thanks to my free credit report. I had to call the FTC and everybody else on that one ( ... )

I went to the annualcreditreport.com website, and got through the first two free reports fine, but when it sent me to transunion's site they wanted me to create a username and password but kept giving me an error message when I tried.

I did get some "verify your identity" questions in the beginning that said "our records indicate you may have a mortgage, please select company" but I just clicked "none of the above" - I thought it was just a security trick, but does that mean that someone applied for a mortgage in my name? It didn't show up on the credit report itself.

That's weird. I think that is what happened to me as well. Maybe it is a hookto get you to sign up for their premium services. I'd just get the free credit reports to which you are entitled, make sure all the info is correct and call your credit card company and bank just in case. It can't hurt.
