My first attempt to prepare and consume an acorn squash!
First, I consulted my Vegetable Guru,
alternatealto, for advice on preparing and cooking, and for reassurance that the green and orange objects I found in the Produce Isle weren't actually practical jokes.
I then halved, cleaned, and baked the objects, foregoing all the recipes I found online that urged me to drowned the poor things in sugar and syrup. I have now scraped the stuff out of the greenish shell and onto a plate. A little butter happened. Also some salt and pepper sprinkled.
Interesting flavour. Earthy, not quite like a potato, but hearty. I've eaten one half, and am now starting on the second. It is weird; my brain is crying out in protest (old childish protests against remembered or imagined yucky-ness), but my tongue is enjoying the food. I foresee this dish becoming a favourite. Certainly it is easy to cook... after I manage to cut the thing in half! lol
Next experiment: Artichokes. They look like alien pods, but
lolmac assures me that they are not, and very much worth the effort of preparing.
OH! And YAY for good choices. My blood sugar level is only a few ml's above normal.
Take THAT, Diabetes! Pththththppththh!!! :p
