I don't understand the point of AU's. That is, I don't understand the point of extreme AU's. An AU that just  goes off in another direction from a turning point within a story (ie Zack in FFVII never died, Kaien in Bleach never died, Vincent escaped from Hojo before being turned into a carrier for a demon, etc. etc.) are fine, they're interesting and many of them are enjoyable to read..

What I'm talking about are AU's where the author takes the characters from an anime, manga or game and puts them into a totally different universe, the most notorious of which is the (to me) dreaded "high school" universe. Said characters become high school students and the story is about their lives as....well...high school students.

Other authors are more fanciful. There is one author who has taken Strife, Sephiroth, Tseng, Rufus, Aeris and verious others from FFVII and put them into a universe where Sephiroth and Tseng are slaves to Strife.

These are the ones the point of which I don't understand. I don't understand because if it weren't for the names you wouldn't have any idea who these people were. Which begs the question of why didn't the author just write an original story. I assume the answer is because nobody would read it then.

Which is kind of sad I suppose. But then I don't read these extreme AU's either.
