Book Review: Lucky Spool's Essential Guide to Modern Quilt Making

Jun 06, 2015 14:36

Lucky Spool's "Essential Guide to Modern Quilt Making" is comprised of ten workshops shared by well-known modern quiltmakers. This book is aimed at the intermediate quilter, not something I realized until after I began to read it. I am a very raw beginner, so I don't have the skillset for many of these workshops that are geared at teaching modern quiliting techniques, but I can appreciate the utility of these classes for once I garner more skills. The introduction of the book recommended that beginner quilters go to the Lucky Spool website for free lessons on quilting basics.

Each chapter focuses on a different element of quilt design and includes a pattern for you to try. Each chapter / class is designed to improve your skills as a quilter, both with composition and design. I liked the presence of the modern designs, which have obvious ties to the more traditional patterns, as well as the recommendations about how to modify designs to make it more original to your style.

Even though geared for the intermediate quilter, this book includes useful tips for creating designs by quilters of any skill level. I would highly recommend this book as a resource for those experienced quilters (for the beginner, not so much).

I received a free copy of this ebook through NetGalley in return for a fair and honest review.
