Spending Christmas Eve at a funeral is not the best way to kick off the holidays, I have to say. But it did put some things in perspective. Because as my aunt said in her speech (which had to be read out by the funeral director because she did not have the strength to do it herself), she and her late husband would like nothing more than for us, their loved ones, to go home and celebrate Christmas and New Year's, and be thankful for everything that we have. So that's what I'm doing right now.
So much to be thankful for this year:
- I am thankful to have had my health, a roof over my head, and no worries about money.
- I am thankful for my Mum, whom I can talk to about anything, at any time. And while she sometimes exasperates me with her "good" parental "advice", I know she only does it because she loves me more than anything.
- I am thankful for my Enormous Freak Of A Baby Brother, because even though we can drive each other up the wall at times, he is also the best friend anyone could ever have and I know when it comes to it, there is nothing he wouldn't do for me.
- I am thankful that relations with my big brother are on the mend, and that he found love again in his life and is a happier and better person for it.
- I am thankful for my two little fluffballs, who bring me so much joy every day just by being here and loving me so unconditionally and completely, it frightens me sometimes.
- I am thankful for my job and my dear supervisor, who has more faith in my abilities than I do most of the time, and who managed to get me further in my career even when it meant losing me as of next year.
- I am thankful for my friends both on-and-offline, who support me and are there for me and make me just a little bit less of a sociopath by doing so. :)
- I am thankful to
dutchdiamont and her husband for asking me to sing at their wedding and offering me the honour to be part of their special day.
- I am thankful that my friend True came to visit me in April despite the volcano trouble, and that our week together managed to take her mind off the loss she suffered.
- I am thankful to
samena, for being my friend in movies, fandom, and all things, and agreeing to come to New Zealand even if that means having to share a room with me for three weeks. ;)
- I am thankful for Ring*Con and Castlefest and Elf Fantasy Fair and Edge Of The Wild Moot, because these events gave me the opportunity this year to see old friends again and rejoice in my own geekage.
- I am thankful for the music, the songs I'm singing, and for all the joy they're bringing... ;)
- I am thankful for the addition of babies Dex and Luna to my extended family, and the knowledge that they are safe, healthy, and loved.
- I am thankful for all my fandoms this year, old and new, and the joy each has brought me in its own little special way.
- And, silly though it may sound, I am thankful for Dom, and the inspiration he still gives me, even if he will never know it. After all these years, he is still my muse.
HAPPY CHRISTMAS, EVERYONE.
