We need to talk.

Lylith stared at her homework in contemplation for a good ten minutes before deciding she really didn't want to do it. She picked up her phone and contemplated calling Bartholomew, but then it occurred to her that seeing him would probably put mixed feelings in her head about Ethan. She really missed Lo, but she knew if she talked to him then Ethan ( Read more... )

Joshua's cellphone jolted into life, vibrating with a loud growl. He glanced down at the number, told Jennifer he would brb on instant messenger, and slid the cellphone up as he put it to his ear.

"Yo. What's up, my main squeeze?" he said through a grin, obviously making an attempt to use shitty ghetto.

Lylith shook her head with a puzzled expression then rolled her eyes. "If you're not busy, I'd like it you could come over sometime today. I sort of... I need your advice. And I know I'm probably the first that's asked you for it, and for good reason, but I really do need to talk to you."

Her voice sounded sincere as she spoke. even she could pick up on her own confused and honest tone.

What she said should have miffed Joshua - honestly, he gave amazing advice, so what was with that 'I'm probably the first to ask you' shit? - but he wasn't too bothered because it was Lylith and he knew what she thought of him. The flirt, the whore, that guy who Bartholomew was occasionally caught necking. That guy.

"I don't have much going on today, just some shit for law school I need to glance over later, but that can wait." If his parents found out, oh well, they could sue his ass for all he cared. It'd be good practice for him to find legal ways to avoid their anger.

"When do you want me over? Your dad doesn't have a problem with me-" he was the clean cut one, the ambitious one that every father liked (until they caught him with his hand up their daughter's skirt) "-right?"

"Yeah, he doesn't mind you. If it's alright, I'd prefer you come over as soon as possible. I need to discuss things concerning Bartholomew. You're his best friend, so I figure you'd be the best one to talk to about it."

Her voice was unusually quiet compared to how she usually was. She still had Ethan on her mind, and talking about Bartholomew was already creating confusion in the back of her mind.

"Yeah, I'll be over in a few minutes." He clicked his phone off, sent a relatively lewd (yet loving) farewell to Jennifer over AIM, and slid on flip-flops. It was just Lylith - it was Lo's job to impress her, not his - so he didn't bother changing out of his relaxed sweatpants or white hoodie (brand names though they were) and opted for comfort over style.

Bolting through the house, he grabbed a banana for the road and was parking his 'Benz beside Lylith's complex within roughly ten minutes. It was nice owning a fast car.

Then Joshua was buzzing in to Lylith's apartment, chewing noisely while he waited for her to let him in.

Lylith went over to the door and let him in, smiling. "Thanks for coming. You didn't have to rush or anything. " She glanced up at her clock, shocked at how fast he had arrived.

"Dad won't be home until later, so we don't have to worry about him."

"Aight." He nodded, dropping his jacket on the couch and kicking off his shoes. "I think I made a new shortcut on my way over. No lie."

"As long as you don't get in an accident and I don't get blamed for it I don't care too much." She grabbed a bottle of water out of the fridge then sat down on the couch, looking up at him.

"How's Lo doing?"

Joshua peeked into her fridge, grabbed a bottle of coke, and plopped down onto the couch beside her. "Bartholomew is the same as always - this blob of useless angst, pale skin, and cleanliness. His apartment smells like someone soaked the furniture and walls with bleach. It's awful on the nostrils." He shrugged, taking a swig from his bottle before he continued. "Aka, he's just being there. I've seen him better, but you two are on speaking terms again? He isn't as mopey as he was right after you two split. Which," cure a pointed glare in Lylith's direction, "was the worst decision of your silly human life."

Lylith looked away, her jaw tightening. "Well, he didn't try his hardest to keep me from leaving either. I gave him more than enough chances."

Her fingers played along the edge of the bottle as she glanced back up at him. "Which is what I need to talk to you about. Now that we're not together he's calmed down with the prostitution, but now I'm gaining interest in someone in my school. I'm very confused with what to do."

The werewolf cocked his head to the side, lips pursed around the edge of the coke can. "Really? Man, I thought Lo was the only hottie you had eyes for." He snorted into the soda, rolling his eyes. "Listen, I totally don't blame you for getting the hots for someone else. I love Lo and all but.. he isn't me. What's this other guy's name?"

"His name is Ethan... and he's amazing." She smiled, looking up at him as the smile turned to a dorky, lovesick, puppy. "He's sweet, and charming, smart... cute. He seems almost too perfect."

She took a deep breath then let out a sigh. "And that's where I'm having the issues. I still like Lo, but Ethan is..." She let the sentence drift off, leaving it to Josh's imagination to finish it.

"Ethan isn't Lo. Ethan sounds like the ideal boyfriend. How long have you know him?" he asked around another swig, raising a skeptical eyebrow.

"Well, he's been in a few of my classes all year and I just failed to notice him. We've only been talking for a few weeks, but he's... the ideal boyfriend. It seems almost impossible." She smiled and leaned over a bit.

"I still have feelings for Bartholomew though, and I know he's not going to change. I don't really want him to change, I just wish he would straighten up a bit. He won't do that so I'm trying to "move on." I don't know what to do. Should I wait until my feelings for Lo are gone or should I just try dating someone else?"

"You know, I've only ever met one person who was as close to perfection as humanly possible - and you know what? That person went nuts." He was talking about his aunt, but there was some sort of unspoken rule amongst his family that made her an unapproachable topic, so he didn't delve into further explanation. Anyway, this was about Ethan versus Lo, not his aunt.

"I can't stop you from going after this Ethan guy but Bartholomew is a good guy, despite his.. batty ways. I'm not supposed to tell you this, but I think it's pretty relevant to you, too." Joshua's mouth slunk into a crooked frown, more contemplative than distressed. "Lo's been trying to drink like the regular vampires recently. Less like he used to and more.. well, you know, Lestat style."

Lylith's eyes widened and she sat back up, looking away, concern filling her eyes. "H-He's killing people?!"

There was a slight panic in her tone and she closed her eyes, trying to shuffle through thoughts concerning whose fault it was that he changed. She couldn't help but feel responsible, but then again, maybe that's exactly what Lo and Josh wanted. Maybe they wanted her to feel guilty and get back together with him.

"That doesn't sound like Bartholomew." Her voice was quiet again as she looked up at her ex's friend, purely confused now.
