Chapter 4
a few weeks later
I shut the front door.
i was beinging to hate my job at the book store.
it was back to work for me, from 8am till 5pm.
Jepha was no doubt causing mayhem while i was gone.
i set my purse down.
and zelda ran up to me
"hey zel, where's daddy?" i said reaching down and petting him
i heard moaning come from the bedroom
i got up and made my way to the bedroom
i pushed the door open quitely...
i was met with the sight of two bodies in the bed.
"what the fuck is going on?"
i saw the bodies topple off the bed
i walked into the room.
i saw quinn and some blonde stand up
quinn wrapped himself in part of the blanket
"haha..hi meg" quinn smiled
"wow i'm sorry quinn, what are you doing in my bed? and where is jeph?"
"Jeph asked me to stay here while he went out to do something..he didn't say what..."
"uh...and i got bored waiting..so invited jessica over" he smiled
"ah...i see" i said
"well..i'll leave you alone"
"no it's fine..we'll get out of your hair" quinn said grabbing his clothes and jessica's hand..and pulling her to the bathroom
i sat down on the couch and opened a book
watching tv is over rated
"meg, thanks for letting us use your bedroom" quinn laughed
"no problem"
"sorry to scare you also..." quinn said
"hey quinn are you sure he didn't say where he was going or what time he would he be back?"
"well he did...but i'd be killed if i told" he grinned leaving with jessica
i rolled my eyes
i bolted awake..to the sound of a car engine
i looked around me..it was pitch black
the numbers on the clock were fuzzy
i think it said midnight
i got up and rubbed my eyes
i heard some one open the back door
i could smell cigarette smoke and some form of liqour.
they flicked on the light
"hey" jepha said
'hey, what you doing back so late?"
"i was dealing with some stuff" he said
"oh?"
"i'll explain in the morning...i just need to sleep right now" he said
walking past me
"are you okay?"
"i'll explain everything in the morning i swear" he said turning around to face me
he pulled me into his arms suddenly
"i would never lie to you, you know that..i promise you nothing is wrong.."
"is it about us?"
"no it's not" he said running his hand down my face
"okay" i nodded
we went to sleep in silence...
and i woke early the next morning...thankfully i had this friday off
i found jeph sitting at the table eating breakfast
"morning" i yawned
'morning" he mumbled
the air between us was different..i didn't want to push it, but i didn't feel at ease around him like i usually did..
he set his glass down and cleared his throat
"we need to talk" he said sighing
"okay...'
"last night i went out to clear my head and think about us.."
"yeah"
"i ended up running into my daughter and her mother, turns out the mother has cancer and she hasn't responded to treatment...she doens't have that much longer
left, but she has no one else to give Anna to...her mother is dead, as are any other close relatives. she really hated having to turn to me, but she heard
from quinn and bert that i am in a really steady relationshp. and she wants to keep anna around her friends and in the same town."
"how old is anna?"
"almost 13"
"does she know what's going on with her mother?"
"that she is going to die? yes"
i sighed
"i wanted to make sure this was alright with you first.."
"what do you mean, of course it's alright, i'm not gonna say no, that would be cruel"
he nodded
"she's gonna come stay here while her mother moves into the hospital. and probably while her mother is in the hospital"
"i only talked to her some...she didn't say much. she knows she has no choice really"
i nodded
"well i can clean up the spare room..and we can get her settled in"
"yeah, i'm going over tomorrow to help her pack up her room. you can come if you like"
"maybe you should bond with her first,instead of shoving me into her life" i said
"alright..i suppose so" he said
"you still seem agitated"
"i know i'm sorry, it just feels like a weight on me now..and i know it's stupid to feel this way. but i am glad she's coming. but i dunno
now there is stuff we just can't do any more.." he sighed
"male instinct" he said smirking
"typical" i sighed rolling my eyes
"well....i'm not sure she's gonna wanna hear us in the next room"
"true.." i nodded
"meg?" he said
"hmmm"
"i love you" he smiled
"i love you too" i said
he looked at me
"what? stop it" i laughed
he smirked
i laughed
"alright mister...you have 5 minuets to get in there" i said going to the bedroom
he ran after me and landed on the bed with a thump.
i picked up boxes and set them in the hallway
we never actually used the spare room.
i think both of us in the back of our minds thought it would be a babies room one day.
Jepha was with anna helpng her pack. then he was gonna take her out shopping after wards for anything she wanted.
this was gonna be a difficult situation.
what happens when jeph leaves for tour?
i'll be here with anna...i had to bond with her as much as i could be jeph left.
i heard the front door close
they couldn't be back already
i grabbed the boxes from the hallway and made my way into the living room
jepha stood with a girl about 5 feet, she had straight black hair and green eyes. she had jepha's face shape.
but i could tell the girl must look mostly like her mother.
"Anna, this is my girlfriend meg" jepha said
i just realized how ridiculous and short term girlfriend sounded
"hey anna..nice to meet you. i'm just finishing cleaning up your room" i said
she nodded
"thank you" she said quietly
"jeph, quinn called he wants you to call him back asap" i said setting the boxes down on the counter
"alright" jeph said grabbing the boxes
"i'll help, just in the garage right?" jeph said
"yeah, i gotta finish..i found some of bert's clothes in there...covered in lord knows what"
jepha laughed
anna was sitting on the couch, while jeph carried boxes out...
"so anna, do you like to read?"
"it's ok.."
"well we got alot of books if you're intrested"
"do you have cable?" she said looking up at me
"yeah we do..we have internet too...don't worry i'd die with out the internet" i laughed
she smiled
jepha came in
"done, who's hungry? i can make lunch"
"you hungry anna?"
"yeah a little"
"what would you like?" jeph said
she shrugged
"well seeing as this is a vegetarian house hold..."
"i'm not"
"i figured you wouldn't be, meg here..is only slight veggie..she eats fish"
"and some meat..i could never be full vegetarian..i no longer eat fast food..so just hush" i said sticking my tongue out at him
he stuck his tongue back out at me.
i saw anna smirk out of the corner of my eye
"so we can order pizza, or i can make something"
"pizza is fine" anna said
"i'll get half cheese and half eat for you flesh eaters" jeph said picking up his cell phone
i rolled my eyes
"here..let me show you to your room" i smiled
"i can take that for you" i said pointing to her box
she handed it over
"it's not much" i said
"but i'm sure we could paint the walls if you want, jepha has this amazing artist freind alex. if you give him a sort of sketch design, he could definately paint it
out for you"
"that would be cool" she said
i set the box down on the floor
"did you guys pack up your bedroom furniture?"
'jeph said we would go buy some after dinner"
'oh..alright"
"what would you like to dirnk for dinner you guys?" jeph said coming in
i looked at anna
"pepsi is fine" she said
"same' i said
"alright..pepsi..let me give you the address" jepha said walking away
"so how long have you been with jeph?" anna said quietly, sitting down on the floor and opening a box
"4 almost 5 years"
"ah..cool" she said
"so do you like school?"
"yeah it's ok"
"you in middle school?"
"yeah.."
'sometimes i miss school"
"did you go to college?"
"i did....that's how i met jepha actually"
"ah...cool"
"why do you call him jepha?"
"it's his nickname, i guess the band gave it to him" i said
"do you like music?"
"i do..i've heard some of the used's stuff, it's okay" she said
i nodded
zelda came running in and barking
"hush zel' i said reaching down and petting her
"this is zelda, jeph's dog" i said
zelda ran over to anna and sniffed her
she ran off
"zelda is a big chicken" i said
later that night we ate and got furniture. and anna was settled in her room.
it was about 10pm and i sat in the living room, reading
while jepha practiced his bass with headphones on.
i heard anna come out
"could i have something to drink?" she said
"oh sure" i said getting up
"cups are above the sink..for next time you get thirsty" i said handing her one.
"thanks"
"do you usually go to bed this early?" i said
"it's out of habit" she said
"well tomorrow is saturday..so you have my permisson to stay up late"
she laughed a little
"it's okay, i am kinda tired" she said
'alright, well good night"
"night anna" jepha said
'night" she said walking to her room and closing the door
i looked at jeph
"things will get better" he said sliding off the head phones
i nodded
"bed time for us too?"
"are you tired?" i said
"not really"
"well i kinda am, and i don't feel that great, too much pizza i think" i said standing up and stretching
"mmm don't do that...you make me hot doing that" he winked
i winked back stretching more
"you're such a tease, you know we can't do anything" he said
"well we could, but it would have to be quiet, plus i don't think we should traumatize her , her first night here" i said
"true, i'll be in the bedroom in a second" he said
"alright" i said heading back into the bedroom.
