Yesterday I bought some walking boots. The strong dollar makes such a difference, and they were heavily discounted anyway. I shall be able to tramp about without aggravating my blisters.
Visited
Wibbling Wools in their new shop on Churchgate Street. Lovely and airy. It was great to catch up with Teresa, Lydnsey's offsider, while having a knit. The new shop has tables so you can sit down and peruse the knitting books, or pull out your yarn and needles and get cracking. In the near future they will open a cafe so you can drop in and knit anytime.
While in town I caught up with Jean, who introduced me to her friend Jill. That took care of the afternoon, very pleasantly. As an added bonus Jill recommended a couple of plays that sound good if I get to /london. I only just got back to the car to catch a lift home with Caroline. When I heard she was going to Cambridge to check out a famous pub, I invited myself along. Dinner with Caroline and her friends was a hoot. especially when I showed them a shortcut that neither of the locals knew.
The Eagle is a large pub, busy but still intimate. I told my dinner companions that it is what Australian visitors are looking for in an English pub. Its in the centre of Cambridge, down a side road opposite King's College, yet it feels quite countryish. There is a beer garden in a courtyard. There are nooks and crannies. Even on a Monday night it was fairly full and we had to pounce on a table. I can recommend the burgers, the lamb shank and the steak. Sadly, I chose to have the ravioli, which was perfectly fine but not fabulous like the other meals. A glass of sav blanc eased the pangs of disappointment. As did talking and laughing with a most interesting bunch of women.
Today brings a lunch at
The One Bull in Bury with Jean, our haunt of past years as it is next door to Wibbling Wools old premises.
