Knitting in Public

Today is World Wide Knitting in Public Day.

The Wibbling Wools Women were out in force in the Abbey Gardens from 2pm today.  The sun shone although the breeze was a bit nippy. It was not just my delicate Australian hide that thought so, either. Yet we enjoyed strawberries grown by Mary in her allotment garden, and they were sweet and delicious. Denise brought some cake, and we all brought our knitting (or crochet).

WWKIP in 2009 was my first knitting adventure in Arcadia, so this was a significant anniversary for me. One lady, Tanya, I only ever seem to see at this event. Mr A's sweater is growing, and with the Great Barton knitting night next Wednesday and regular Wibbling on Thursday it seems likely to continue at a brisk pace. The Abbey Gardens are a lovely location and full of people. The variety of yarns and projects was quite amazing. A dozen people with a dozen totally different projects. One lady was even knitting the Hogwarts Sorting Hat (as a cafetiere cosy). Good fun.

My lunch, eaten before the knitting event, was an M&S sandwich: brie, grape and cranberry on granary bread (aka 'wholemeal' in Australia).  I tried a non-alcoholic sangria drink too:  grape, apple, orange, and cinnamon extract.  It  didn't taste like sangria but it was delicious. The brie wasn't runny enough or old enough but M&S get points for trying.

Dinner tonight was a Waitrose chicken and mushroom pie with steamed veggies. The upper end of pre-prepared food is of a high quality here in Blighty. It's a treat to be able to forage rather than actually cook every night. I also treated myself to a steak, as Mr Host is bound to fire up the BBQ sometime this weekend.

Tonight the Host Family Robinson did a test-run erection of their new party pavilion.  It will be needed on Sunday week for a big milestone event - Mrs Host's parents celebrate 50 years of marriage. The pavilion went together as well as any I've ever used before, which is to say that Mr Host will be reducing the length of each horizontal pole slightly so that the roof will go on properly. I went out to watch the family work but ended up helping a bit because I couldn't help myself.

And so to bed, to quote Pepys.
