"That's the point of official sadism..."

Well, I watched Underworld, too. Why does it get quite so little love? This is the second time I've watched it now and I still liked it. Very, very dogdy CSO, of course and other very 70s Who flaws, but if those are really going to bother you, why are you watching 1970s DW?

But what I want to know is what happened in between The Sun Makers and this to put the TARDIS crew in such a bad mood? Leela is stroppy, the Doctor's grumpy and even K9's ratty in the opening scene. (Of course, I'm thinking of story reasons why now.) In fact, Leela stays sulking most of the way through, which is different to usual, but quite fun in places. Poor Leela doesn't like getting pacified! (Another strop, and a near-tearful sulk: "You're all laughing at me!") Last time I watched this stretch of stories, I didn't have a couple of them and it really was when I was ill. I did not appreciate things properly. Now I'm seeing just what a great TARDIS team this is and why the production team were doing everything they could a story later to stop Louise from leaving. And I do like the Doctor helping the terrified Idas, showing us a side of Four we've seen all too rarely. And while the Leela/Doctor-ness of Image was scary, the little touches in this are quite sweet really, especially when they're going to crash and, on being told to hold on, Leela has a look and decides the Doctor is the best thing to hold on to. Aw. And her telling Idas, "Do not worry. He has saved many fathers!"

Anyway, it has some interesting and different ideas, some lovely modelwork to try and counter-balance the dodgy CSO and no one's sending it up and it all just about works within its own logic (probably not outside it!). And by the end, my TARDIS team are back to being charming again. And Leela kisses K9. (So, despite being quite the strumpet, she only kisses K9 and Colby? That's also kind of funny...)

The crew of the ship are unfortunately all 100,000 years old and prove to be the first men to take no notice of Leela. Maybe that's why she's sulking...

Sorry, that turned into a rambling few words on Leela and not really a review of any sort at all. Ho hum, this is my LJ. :-P
