30 Days of Telly Meme - Day 15

May 31, 2010 17:31

Only 1 day behind now! Yay.

Day 15 - Favorite female character:

So many to choose from, but there's only one who's definitely in the top spot here: Ruth Evershed, Spooks's Senior Analyst, as played by Nicola Walker.

The Ruthiness of Ruth defies description, so have a pretty much spoiler-free fanvid:

Ruth: "I like to think there isn't an institution in the country that's safe from me."

I always liked Spooks but I think my real love for it started the moment Ruth walked into the briefing room, dropped all her files, suggested that they "B*gger the Home Office!" and then broke her light, before solving the case. "Bonkers but brilliant," was the team's verdict. Yes, there are many, many awesome females on TV, but Ruth is my favourite.

Very Honourable Mentions:
Doctor Who - Every single female companion, if I'm honest:

But if I have to tie it down, right now, I'd have to go for:

Leela (Louise Jameson)

"You will do as the Doctor instructs or I will cut out your heart!"
I've said rather a lot about Leela in this journal, so I'll spare you, but she's a noble savage, she fears nothing, and likes her men to be useless. And she even manages to be both blue-eyed and brown, and Louise Jameson is great.

(With much love also for Barbara, Vicki, Polly, Zoe, Romana I, Tegan, Nyssa, Ace, Charley, Evelyn, Martha and Donna. And everyone, really. I did miss Sarah, but because I have a sneaking suspicion I think Elisabeth Sladen is more awesome than SJS. Oh, and there's Liz, and Jo... all of them. It's no good.)

Lynda Day (Julia Sawalha)

"Dear diary, it's that cute American again, and he's searching my desk. Does this mean he fancies me? It's so difficult to know what to say in these situations. One wants to be firm with him, but just a little seductive. Find out what the hell he's doing, but maybe encourage him a little. I need style, authority, and sex appeal." [pause, and, to Spike] "Something of interest in my drawers?"

Again, much has been said here, but Lynda is the sort who could take over the world if she didn't have other, better things to do. It was Julia Sawalha's breakthrough, and she's fantastic in the role.

Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew)
"Now this is how I prefer the Borg: in pieces."

I mentioned a couple of days back about my liking for Voyager and it is absolutely all to do with Captain Janeway. I like that she's clever, too stubborn for her own good, flirty, funny, has a coffee-addiction - and is still more than capable of telling unpleasant aliens to get the hell off her ship or she'll blow them to kingdom come. (Once it's got past that pesky space directive stuff). And Kate Mulgrew must be the only person to have captained a space ship and done a one-woman stage show based on the life of Katherine Hepburn. I think she belongs on this list.

Chakotay: "Can I ask you a question? Off the record? If things had happened differently and we were on the Maquis ship now instead of Voyager - would you have served under me?"
Janeway: "One of the nice things about being captain... is that you can keep some things to yourself." (Translation: "Not a chance in hell, buddy!")

Cordelia Chase (Charisma Carpenter)

"My glamorous LA life. I get to make the coffee *and* chain the boss to the bed - gotta join a union!"
Well, duh, as she would say. (And don't get me started on certain bits of Angel, but still, smug Cordelia moments are always great. And she goes from shallow, self-obsessed prom-queen to a champion in her own right.)

If I were further on with The West Wing, I would definitely add Donna Moss; I couldn't decide between Jenna, Cally, Dayna and Soolin for Blake's 7, but I would have liked one of them here, especially Jenna or Cally. If there was a place for villain's Servalan would be there too. Also The X-Files' Dana Scully. (Duh.) From the Buffyverse, much love for Willow and Fred. And the Hilly Holly from Red Dwarf. (I know no one else can be Norman Lovett, but Hattie was great, occasionally even glamourous, and it was a way of getting a female presence on board with upsetting the dynamics.)
