30 Days of Telly Meme - Day 14

May 31, 2010 11:56

I'm still behind, so I'll probably post Day 15 later. They sit together happily, but I want two posts of joyous celebration, not one. Or something.

Day 14 - Favorite male character

Being a Doctor Who fan makes this answer pretty boring, doesn't it? Who can compete with the Doctor in all his incarnations?

Yes, all of him.

I'm trying not to mention more than one character per show, of those I do list, but how could I fail to say something in favour of Harry Sullivan (who really isn't an imbecile) and the awesomeness that is Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart?

So, a very silly Harry/Sarah fanvid.

Brigadier: "Just for once, Doctor, I'd like to meet an alien menace that isn't immune to bullets."

I could do 30 days of Doctor Who scenes and Doctor Who characters, so I'll leave it there, with two hard-working UNIT fellows.

And, so, the runners up are:

Vila Restal and Kerr Avon (Blake's 7)
Vila: "Die? I can't do that!"
Avon: "I'm afraid you can. It's the one talent we all share, even you."

Vila: "Yes, I always knew you had a friend. I used to say to people, "I bet Avon's got a friend... somewhere in the galaxy."
Avon: "And you were right. That must be a novel experience for you."

My idea to limit these runners up to no more than one per show fell aground here, because while Vila really is my fave, by a whisker, how can you not mention Avon in a list of best male TV characters?

So have a general B7 fanvid :

Vila (Michael Keating)
Hello there. How are you? Excuse me wandering about your premises but I wonder if you can help me. I'm an escaped prisoner. I was a thief but recently I've become interested in sabotage, in a small way you understand, nothing too ambitious, I hate vulgarity, don't you? Anyway, I've come to blow something up. What do you think will be most suitable?
What can I say? The only B7 character to appear in every episode, and in many ways, the one who's the light relief, but in fact, I can't help but feel that we really know very little about him at all, and he's definitely more dangerous than he seems.

Avon (Paul Darrow)
"I am not expendable, I'm not stupid, and I'm not going."
If you don't know why I had to include Avon, you probably need to watch Blake's 7.

Kenny Phillips, Press Gang (Lee Ross)

“Me, nice? You’re talking to world champion nice here. I’m so nice I get socks for Christmas - and I like it. I’m so sweet and lovable cuddly toys sneer at me.”
I think Kenny must be TV's ultimate nice guy, but he's not stupid and he has a dry sense of humour. He's put up with Lynda Day for over 12 years, has hidden depths, and is certainly the only character on this list to fall in love with a wrong number.

Arnold Rimmer (Chris Barrie)
"Look, I'm not much good at big speeches, and I know I haven't always been an easy guy to get on with, and I know, that given the choice, I wouldn't have chosen you as friends, but I just want to say, that over the years, I have come to regard you as … people I met."
And in complete contrast to the last, or maybe not. Because Rimmer's a complete and utter weasel of a bastard, who could easily be a nice guy. And, it seems, even a hero. If he weren't Arnold Judas Rimmer. As Kryten says, "He's merely guilty of being Arnold Rimmer. That is his crime, and that is his punishment." Kudos to Chris Barrie for walking the narrow line between sympathetic and appalling, so we can see how unlikeable Rimmer is, but still wind up liking him nevertheless.

Gene Hunt, Life On Mars/Ashes to Ashes (Philip Glenister)
Really I can only let Gene speak for himself:

And, as we've learned only a week or so ago, there's a lot more to him...

Those who I had to leave out so that I could do something else today: Harry Pearce (Spooks; "I like the niceties. They keep us from tyranny."), Hiro Nakamura (Heroes), Rupert Giles (Buffy; "I'm an unemployed librarian with a tendency to get bashed over the head.") and Josiah Bartlet (The West Wing; "You know, I was watching a television program before with a sort of a roving moderator who spoke to a seated panel of young women who were having some sort of problem with their boyfriend, apparently because the boyfriends had all slept with the girlfriends' mothers. Then they brought the boyfriends out and they all fought right there on television. Tell me Toby, these people don't vote do they?").
